I've been usin knoppix 3.6 from the cd for quite a while. I have a very old pc: intel pentium ii - 333 mhz, ram: 96 mb. its a crappy computer and i use win98. The thing is that i cant get knoppix to mount the hard disks. i tried using gpart when installin but it doesnt detect dos partitions (they work just fine in win98)...if i try to format the disk it totally freezes. i really dont no what to do and im sick of windows, i wanna install knoppix to take more advantage of this pc.

And have you tried to install a Linux distro that is suitable for hard disk install, like Debian?

Yea, Knoppix is based on Debian. But it's not Debian, it' a Live CD and not suitable for hard disk install. See answer #2 (http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/User:Harry_Kuhman) for details.
