hi ppls i have a problem
please tell me how to "root" a user and why my
harddrive (usb one not main) says i don't have
permissions
right now i only can use floppys!\

All HD media is read only be default. If your partions is FAT32 you can change this in properties of the hard drive. Select the drive, right click on it, select properties, go to device tab and unselect the read only check box. I would not do this on an NTFS partition (XP default) without testing on a test system. Knoppix 511 allows that, but I heard that it is still in experimental state and have not tested it yet.

btw will xp recognise fat 32?

XP recognizes FAT32 without any problem. I would upgrade to 5.1.1. Beryl is worth it. Whoever I have shown my laptop to wants it. The DVD image is greater then 4 gigs, so you can only save it to an NTFS partition.

As for usability, 5.0.1 is also quite good. It does not have the ntfs writing utility, but can write to fat32 partitions very well.

If you are buying a nic, check for compatible versions. I use the built in wireless nic on mine and it works perfectly.

Once you open your drive, just select root window from knoppix menu for root access or to change password.
