View Full Version : Knoppix 5.1.0 and Linksys WMP54G

I'm trying to set up and print and file server for my home office and decided to try Knoppix. My Linux experience is small but I spent a several years in a Solaris environment so there a lot of familiar things.

Hardware:
- Asus Terminator C3 (Via C3 800mHz processor)
- Linksys WMP54G wireless PCI card version 4.1 (Ralink RT2561/RT61)
- Linksys WAP54G access point version 3
- Linksys WCG200 cable gateway (router/modem, no version on the package)

Knoppix 5.1.0 2006-12-30

I cannot get the WMP54G to start. From what I've been able to see (and partially understand) is that the kernel contains and is loading the RT61pci driver. However, it fails with

rt61pci->rt61pci_init_firmware_cont: Error - Failed to load Firmware

I don't know enough to figure why that's happening. I believe everything else I try after that is linked to that problem. FYI, the AP is in the same room as this box.

------------- iwconfig output ----------------------------------------
wmaster0 IEEE 802.11g Frequency:2.412 GHz
RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2346 B

wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:""
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2346 B
Encryption key:off
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I can easily set ESSID, ENCRYPTION, ACCESS POINT on wlan0 with iwconfig. When I try "ifconfig wlan0 up" after setting those items, I get:

IOCSIFFLAGS: No such device

...which means to me that the device driver is not loaded but I'm just a newbie.

Not sure where to go from here. I suspected IRQ conflict but don't know enough to see if there are any other clues on that. I see the wireless card is sharing with IDE and USB. I looked at memory locations but nothing obvious to me. The BIOS manager allows me to reserve an IRQ but I don't know how that hooks into the card in the slot.

I messed with NDISWRAPPER for a few minutes without success but thought I should follow through on this first as it seems that I should be able to run this card directly. For kicks, I tried cheatcode "knoppix acpi=off noapic pci=bios" but still get the "Failed to load Firmware" message.

Thanks for any help.

Paul

Downloaded the firmware file from http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Linux.html and copied it to /lib/firmware.

Reloaded the driver:

modprobe -r rt61pci
modprobe rt61pci

...then...

ifconfig wlan0 down
ifconfig wlan0 up

Now getting "BBP register access failed" when I scan for APs and the module is unloaded. One step forward.

I got the feeling that the "BPP register access failed" was a something that couldn't be overcome so I switched to a Belkin Wireless G Plus Desktop Card . This is now working - I will post details on the "How to use ndiswrapper" thread (http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26539)
