I need to tweak my x window configration on Knoppix 5. Can anyone tell me which file or files i need to be editing?

All the X window configuration is from the central file
/etc/X11/xorg.cong
You can try
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
from an alternate console.
In non-debian based distros there is xmodelines to generate a modeline at a desired refresh rate, however with knoppix you can try xvidtune from a terminal.
Also have a look at this guide:

Thanks for the reply and i`ll try it out.
Out of curiosity the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not appear to be present in knoppix 4. why is that?

Probably because it uses XFree86, the file may be /etc/X11xf86config.
