Ever wondered if you could download the same file from multiple mirrors/bittorrent at simultaneously. The download speeds are incredible especially for folks in Universities etc where bittorrents might be banned.

With http://www.metalinker.org/ there is a way to do that.
All you need is a tool which understand metalinks like free/open source downloads like aria2 at http://aria2.sourceforge.net/ or wxdownloadfast at http://sourceforge.net/projects/dfast/

You can download knoppix 5.1.1 using metalink by downloading the metalink file from http://www.metalinker.org/samples.html

Metalinker was covered on slashdot.org awhile ago here is a link http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/02/25/144209

Cool, glad you're finding metalink useful.

Another really important part is that they can contain chunk checksums. These let you repair corrupted downloads started with other programs, or fix errors during the download. Very helpful for multi gig ISOs.

The current knoppix metalinks don't have these chunk checksums, but I can add them if people are interested. It would be nice to have aria2 or wxDownload Fast included, as you mentioned.

The knoppix 5.1.1 metalinks at http://www.metalinker.org/samples.html now contain chunk checksums for fixing downloads with errors.

judging by the speed of the kpackages packages manager downloads, they havent yet integrated aria2 to be kpackages default updater:)

apt-get install aria2

after you update your packages

then

man aria2c

to use it in a shell (not aria2)
