cannot burn dvd's on knoppix 5.1.1

I recently obtained a Knoppix cd so I could rescue information off my ailing system, then reinstall windows. But so far the burning software that comes with Knoppix has only ruined the dvd's that I try to burn. Can anyone help me?!?

I borrowed a friends external usb hard drive, so I could move important files there instead, but even though I gave myself full permissions it wouldn't let me change or move anything and I'm having the same problem with my hard drives! :cry:
