View Full Version : booting/usin knoppix using a KVM switch

I got a shuttle FS40
~
http://www.ocworkbench.com/2002/shuttle/ss40/ss40p1.htm
~
which I am using with a KVM Switch (an IOGEAR 4-Port MiniView one)
~
I can boot Windows XP and/or Linux/Debian/knoppix up or shut it down fine using the KVM Switch. The thing is that there seems to be some sort of hard and/or software impedance of the shuttle with the KVM Switch
~
if I run say the cheatcode "knoppix memtest" I can see the multicolor memtest run on the monitor without any problems, but if I let knoppix start by itself I don't see anything on the the monitor if I switch to the knoppix box
~
How can I fix this problem?

Have you confirmed that this actually has anything to do with the kvm switch by disconnecting it and hooking you k v and m right to the computer? I ask because it doesn't sound like a KVM problem to me.

> Have you confirmed that this actually has anything to do with the kvm switch ...
Well, yeah! This is the first thing I did before posting, but I will do it again changing the cables and all of that

I would still retest to confirm that the kvm is indeed a factor. If it still is, one potential issue might be the kvm causing problems with the plug and play detection of the monitor capabilities. Try forcing a video mode that you know will work (both resolution and scan rates, but I mostly suspect that the scan rate that knoppix is defaulting to is too high)

> ... scan rate that knoppix is defaulting to is too high
~
the cheatcode "vga=normal" did the trick
~
how can you tell the scan rate that knoppix is defaulting to?
~
Well, I'd guess you can't see it anyway ;-) you will have to use cheat codes and see what works. I am using one of these flat monitors branded as "planar"
~
I booted into "init 2" and then run startx, but I couldn't see any differences in the dmesg dumps before and after. Are there X related con files from where you can get this info?
~
here is the dmesg dump for the FS40 shuttle after my 2Gb memory upgrade
