I am just about totally new to linux in general as i am to knoppix ...so please make relies as simple as you can for a noobie.

When i try to access my combo cd/dvd burner i get a message about not being able to do that because of HAL.
I get the same message when i am trying to install the windows drivers for my wireless card using ndiswrapper.
Can anyone explain what this is all about and also how to remedy it ?
computer that i am using is a Dell Inspiron E1505 / 15.4 widescreen.. and the 256mb ATI Radeon Mobility video card.
1 gig of ram. 100 gig SATA hard drive.
