can't seem to get sound working on gateway ml 3109

i have a gateway ML 3109 with SigmaTel HD audio and i can't seem to get it to work. i have knoppix live 5.1.0 but the cd saya 5.1.1 i found a site that claims to have linux drivers but will they work with knoppix and if so how do i install them. i am a complete and total newbie so give me step by step instructions if you are going to help me i appreciate it.
