After an hd installation, how can the Konqueror file browser be configured to play audio (mp3) files when the mouse cursor is placed over the audio file's icon?

placed over the audio file's icon

I suspect it can't without a substantial re-write of the code! (And I don't know if "mouse over" exists in the Qt libraries.) But just click on the icon and XMMS will play it (can't remember if you need an "open" XMMS at the time, I suspect not).

It depends whether the file associations are set correctly but there is usually a don't ask again check box in the open dialog so you only have to do it once.

Not on my system it doesn't (on 3.1).

Are we not simply confusing "placed over" (mouse over) with single click?

This feature DOES exist in KDE 3.1
I had it already running under debian, but not with knoppix.
I suppose this is because xmms is not arts, and isn't integrated into kio.
(Normally the job of playing sound files in preview is done by arts, and arts is not installed in knoppix)

arts is not installed in knoppix)

No, no confusion. Knoppix 3.1 Konqueror file browser plays mp3 files when the cursor is placed over an mp3 icon on my system. No click necessary.

Ok, my mistzake. So arts is installed while kaboodle and noatun aren't.
But then why isn't sound preview working?
