copying files

Hey all,
I'm very new to knoppix but very impressed so far. When I try to copy my data from bad hard drive to usb external drive it comes up with an error, "Cannot create folder". I've checked permissions and it seems to be right but still won't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
