superuser and cd-r problem

HI: i just got the 5.3.1 distro from Linux zine.it booted just fine but it does not show my cd-r
on the desktop.in the /etc/fstab i can see all the drives and the dvd but i can not see the cd-r.
at boot time the system sees the cd-r. i change user to root and do a mount -a but it does not
help.also,i can't seem to become the superuser.as you can tell i am a novice at this.i had Knoppix 4.0 and did not have this problem! thank you.

Does the cdr show up when you insert a disk? That's the way my 5.3.1 behaves. Knoppix 4.02 showed the cdr at all times.
