knoppix 5.3.1 vagaries(i.e. xmms and error msg)

I have purchased two(2) 5.3.1 dvds (the first was horrendus).the latest works fine and then on restart/turn off gives
an error msg:
unable to create io-=slave: klauncher said.

i have NOT touched the dvd tracks at all.
the error msg does NOT happen always.

Then when using mp3 player xmms which is a very small icon on desktop;you can double its size.
however when doing so the graphic is illegible and i do not have any controls(stop,pause etc.) because
of the graphic and i can not close the program.
