Hi, does anyone know how to get smail to deliver messages correctly to the knoppix user and new users?

all i seem to get is error messages such as this>
can't send mail: sendmail process failed

this is particularly annoying as smail it preventing me from getting a fetchmail/dovecot system setup. any help, you know what to do.
(i have run smailconfig)
