Hello,
This is my first Linux experience and I'm quite lost.
First a short summary of how I got here, I got this nice Canon HD video camera as a present for my birthday. The software for editing the video that came with it is incompatible with my 64 bit Windows 7 system. There are some nice commercial video editing software, but quite expensive, so looking around I found there are even nicer software, free, but only for Linux. But I also noticed there was a way to try them with these "live cd", "distros" and stuff like that. There is actually a plethora of these and figuring out how to approach is quite daunting.

The first I tried was the Kdenlive here:
http://www.poure.com/kdenlive/debian-live-usb-20090702.x64.img
But got stuck when it apparently does not recognize my Nvidia 9400M graphics card and the boot never finishes.

So then I tried dyne:bolic, hoping to try Cinerrela, but no luck there either, boot never finishes and I don't know why.

So then according to this site:
http://cinelerra.org/getting_cinelerra.php
Knoppix supposedly includes cinerrela so I tried that next.

Now, for the first time knoppix did boot!. I got it the following way, downloaded the universal USB installer and chose koppix fron the list, downloaded that and it got installed in a 4GB USB pendrive.
It does not seem to contain Cinerrela though.

So my first questions are:

1. Knoppix does not seem to be taking full advantage of my display. It is capable of 1920x1200, how can I change that? there are no choices but the default.
2. During boot I chose to allow 2000 MB for data, but no matter how many times I try to setup the internet connection it does not seem to "Stick" and disappears. I have a wired connection, it's not working with knoppix, how do I set it up?
3. Once I get that running, supposing I download Kdenlive,Cinerrela or whatever other application, how do I install them using this USB system?

Thanks for any help.

uhm, the internet connection should stick if you choose to save config in the knoppix menu.

now, to install cinerrela, try using a program called synaptic, there you get a menu with available programs.

you have to add a few lines in a file called sources.list (list of program sources) that lies in the directory /etc/apt
what to add is explained here
http://cinelerra.org/getting_cinelerra.php#apt-x86
to add the line just open the file wiht a text editor as root and simply incert the line somewhere, type the command below in a terminal.

sudo abiword

the rest is described on the page (how to add the key...
keep asking if something is unclear

as for the display, try using cheatcode when you first see the

knoppix:

just type, screen=1920x1200

below you have a few useful links with more information on things you can do in knoppix.

About the internet connection, well by the time I get to save config the connection I have created/edited is already gone, never active. I only get to a menu where I can configure the connection by going through the VPN menu. Then I choose wired and add and enter the IP's . But as soon as I hit apply it's gone!

About installing Cinerrela,
Is the synaptic program already in the USB or is someting I have to download?
When modifiying the sources.list, how do I know which processor to choose? This is intel(R) core(TM) duo CPU T9600@2.8GHZ, I don't see it on the list.

Thank you very much for your help!

Update!

The screen resolution code did not work. Something about not finding a kernel.

The internet connections I created are now there! and working!

I'm totally lost about how to install Cinerrella!

Hey, there is some progress, this thing can really fly in the internet!

Sorry,

I should have probably made three different questions in three different forums. But then If I made all the questions I have I could flood the place. Taking it bit by bit.

Hope it's better now.

Thanks for making the edit. Much like litter on the street, "I'm a noob" posts seem to breed, and if not kept in check they quickly get out of hand.

Hey, there is some progress, this thing can really fly in the internet!

When you see the penguin on startup (before it starts doing all the hardware/software config) type this:
knoppix screen=1920x1200 That should take care of the display issue. Another option for installing software is downloading a ".deb" file from wherever you can find it, then using a program called "gdebi" which can be run by typing that command into a terminal window, then using the interface it gives you to install the .deb file into the OS.

I understand why you don't like it. But it feels necessary. Even as it was, every help response I've gotten so far are highly cryptic to me. I have to read then time and time again and hope they mean what I think they mean. I'm done for the day but tomorrow I'll try to tackle krishna's advices as I understand them hoping there's no surprises. Very little luck so far...yet it's exciting somehow, and nostalgic, feels like the days before Windows...

I certainly have no problem with someone explaining that they are new to Linux in the body of a post. And I don't complain if someone sneaks it into the subject along with a description of their problem. But several years ago this forum was littered with "I'm a noob" or "help" or other lame subject posts, subjects that gave a helper no clue as to what the post might be about, and subject lines that were worthless for searching. And there more there were, it seemed the more likely that the next new user would follow in the same style. I discussed it with the owner of the forum at the time and he agreed it was a problem.

So now, when it happens, we request that the poster give the post a meaningful subject. And it happens far less often now that it used to happen when the forums were littered with uninformative subject lines.

OK, good morning.

I tried the "Knoppix screen=1920x1200" code. No complaints by the system about not finding a kernel. But when the desktop enviroment finally comes up the resolution is still 1024x768 with no other options.

I suspect the system has no idea what my graphic card or display are and is only using some default setting. In this case it's an Nvidia 9400M GeForce. I don't know about the display other than it is a 17" 1920x1200 laptop display. How can I tell the system what the hardware is?

I'm off to try an install Cinerrela now...

Could it be Cinelerra? That's what Google seems to think. Take a look at: http://cinelerra.org/getting_cinelerra.php#apt

here you have a direct link,

http://www.kiberpipa.org/~minmax/cinelerra/builds/sid/cinelerra_2.1.0-2svn20071030_i386.deb

also you may need to install
http://www.kiberpipa.org/~minmax/cinelerra/builds/sid/libguicast_2.1.0-2svn20071030_i386.deb
http://www.kiberpipa.org/~minmax/cinelerra/builds/sid/libmpeg3hv_2.1.0-2svn20071030_i386.deb
http://www.kiberpipa.org/~minmax/cinelerra/builds/sid/libquicktimehv_2.1.0-2svn20071030_i386.deb
http://www.kiberpipa.org/~minmax/cinelerra/builds/sid/libsndfilehv_1.2.2-4cvs20050909_i386.deb

download them to /home/knoppix/desktop
then open a console (terminalwindow, xterm...) and typing

sudo dpkg -i ./home/knoppix/desktop/*i386.deb
should install the .deb files stored there.

keep asking, i will try helping.

ngc7088
03-26-2010, 08:22 PM
OK OK thank you. I will try that next. You see I have been to that page:
http://cinelerra.org/getting_cinelerra.php

I got stuck for various reasons. One is the choice of processors. I was thinking I have not seen i386 since the 80's so that would not be it, then x(86) I'm pretty sure stands for 32 bit, so I had only Athlon 64 as most probable, only what I have is Intel, so that's why I asked before which processor should I choose. I'll go with i386 as you say.

But before an update. I was able to install kdenlive!
I found the synaptic program mentioned before (it was under "preferences"??!!)
Hit "reload" or something to that effect.
Then searched for Cinelerra, no luck there.
Then searched for Kdenlive, it was there!
So I marked it for installation, and it warned me it had to update and download and install many other programs that go with it, I said ok (90MB of stuff) and it seems to be running!

Why is the Cinelerra installation so different?

ngc7088

Try putting in the exact name of the archive, or use gdebi instead to get a graphical environment where you can just "pick" the file. The reason that synaptic didn't find cinelerra is probably due to the /etc/apt/sources edit required to add an appropriate source location. I've never had much luck with that, and feel much more comfortable with the control I get over the process with apt and gdebi - but to each his own. It's the Linux Way...

There are typing errors. The "." at the beginning of the path has to be deleted and the directory name begins with "D". The right command would be
sudo dpkg -i /home/knoppix/Desktop/*i386.deb

There are some packages misssing on your system. You could try the following instructions

1. Edit /etc/apt/sources.list by executing
sudo leafpad /etc/apt/sources.listand adding these four lines

deb http://www.kiberpipa.org/~minmax/cinelerra/builds/sid/ ./
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ sid main non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main non-free

Save the changes and close the editor.

2. Enter these three lines while being connected to the internet:

gpg --keyserver hkp://wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 1F41B907
gpg --armor --export 1F41B907 | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -t sid install cinelerra-cv

3. When I started cinelerra for the first time I got an error message which said that I had to enter
echo "0x7fffffff" > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmaxas root. Therefore I quit cinelerra and entered the following commands

su
echo "0x7fffffff" > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax
exit

Then I started cinelerra again without that error message. To be honest I don't know what the echo command does. As I had not enough time to try out cinelerra I cannot say wether it is useful. Somewhere I read that I must use an 64 bit operating system. Therefore I installed cinelerra on sidux (64 bit version).

Thank you very much!

I'm reading your message somewhat late as I already managed to install it in a different way.

Instead of command lines I figured out the "synaptic" way. In Synaptic Package Manager, under settings there is a "repositories" tab. I slowly learned how to use it and managed to add the required repositories. I suppose it is a "sources.list" editor built in. Also managed to add the keys in a root terminal (using copy paste). Yet reading your message I feel reassured what I did was correct.

I had a lot of truoble and in the end Kdenlive dissapeared. Apparently they cannot be together since they use different versions of the same files or something. I had a nightmare of dependencies to sort out but managed in the end to install Cinelerra CV (comunity version). Impossible to decipher all the Cinelerra (alone) dependencies as some of them were uninstallable (the hell if I know why).

Im going to try it next to see if I can make a nice home movie.

I also got the error you said and did exactly as you did as instructed by the program. Now, how do I know if I'm getting the 64bit advantage? My system is 64 bit, but I had no indication of 64bit cinelerra during the whole process.

It looks like you didn't get everything necessary when you downloaded. Lame in particular is not there, which I think is the nub of the problem. Did you visit the recommended (from http://cinelerra.org/getting_cinelerra.php#apt) page at http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ to get the non-cinelerra multimedia packages it depends on? I know it's tedious, but it WILL work if you are persistent, I'm sure.

Knoppix uses a basic 32 bit i386 kernel. Just another reason why you are better off using Knoppix as a live CD introduction to Linux but going ahead and installing Debian when ready. That way you can choose a kernel that is optimized for your CPU.
