monitor signal dies when xwindows starts

i have a PNY nVidia GeForce 4 ti4600. when knoppix first starts to detect components, the first 3 items fail, then it detects the names and revisions and stuff of all my correct hardware, and then it starts xwindows and the monitor loses signal....i hear the voice say something about loading knoppix and it continues to load....but i have no monitor signal....any help?? please

It's likely that the default resolution & refresh are out-of-range for your monitor. What kind is it?

You can check this as follows: when Knoppix has finishd booting, try the key combination [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[+] (keypad +) to change the resolution on-the-fly -- repeated presses cycle through the available resolutions. If this works, try some of the display/VGA cheat-codes (press [F2] at boot for these).
