Using Knoppix to unlock the permissions on an Apple hard drive

Hi, hopefully someone can help... I've got a hard drive taken from an Apple laptop and I'm trying to copy the files onto an external drive using Knoppix. I can browse the directory structure, but the documents folders on the drive say they're locked, and if I copy everything to the external drive, all the folders are empty. Is there any way to unlock the files using Knoppix? If not, what would it take to unlock them?
