is there a way to install linux software on my hd...while still using the cd to run the os? (not doing a hd install but would like additional programs)
I haven't really tried this out, but I hear that Morphix can now do this so you may want to check it out: www.morphix.org Knoppix may be getting this ability in the future as well.

you can if you don't mind tweaking and a bit of 'experimenting'. Get the translucency module then you can but it hasn't been updated for a while so I don't know if it is still in active development

--It depends on what software you're talking about. If you download a tar.gz and compile it from source, (/ramdisk is a good temporary filesystem to do this on, although volatile) you can mount a file or partition as /usr/local/bin and run it from there. Installing .deb files (dpkg -i) or apt-get stuff is right out unless you're installed to HD.
so this can definitely not be done with knoppix?
