Just put together a new machine, and had to download 6.4.4 to be able to detect all the hardware. Most things work, except that only 2GB of the 8GB of memory is being used. Is there a fix? Does this require using an AMD64 64-bit version of Linux? Does Knoppix have such a release? Thanks!

Knoppix 6.4.4 comes with a 64bit Linux kernel which can address more than 3 GB of RAM. You can try it out by using the cheatcode knoppix64 instead of the usual knoppix at the boot prompt. But be aware that the applications are still 32bit versions.

If you want to stay with 32bit kernel, you might need to recompile the kernel to turn on CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G

My speculation only, as I don't have a machine >4G memory to verify.

If i use the 64bit kernel can i also use the nvidia 3d driver?

Thanks much!!! I'll give that a try next time I reboot. With the applications still being 32bit, what does that mean for running them? Will they just be slower, or should I avoid running certain things to avoid crashes?

Ok, couldn't resist trying it. It boots and runs BLAZINGLY fast. Unfortunately, my wifi adapter doesn't seem to work under a 64-bit kernel. Rosewill RNX-N180UBE (works fine under 6.4.4 with the 32-bit default boot options). I'll have to see if I can find 64-bit drivers for it, or whatever. Oh well, maybe I can get my landlord to run some Cat5 around here.
