I'm turning an old laptop into a scanning station hooked to an Epson scanner. This is for my wife to use. It had XP on it but was running so slow, I decided to put Knoppix on it.

Couple of questions:

1) Seems I have to fire up Xsane as root to get it to work (and it pops up a big WARNING when doing so). I'd like to show my wife how to access the Xsane app. thru Gimp, but I don't want her messing around as ROOT. I can fire up Gimp as root and all works, but I'd like tobe able to run it as a normal user. Can this be done?

2) I've created a Desktop icon (link) to Firefox, but can't figure a way to change the icon (to a Firefox icon).

I tried searching but didn't find anything.

Thanks

What happens when you fire gimp up without beeing root?

And for your links, how did you do it? Normally going to /usr/share/applications and copying firefox.desktop to your desktop should work fine.

... in an old computer, to slow for Windows XP, you cannot run Knoppix!

Knoppix needs RAM and especially GIMP needs RAM, at least 512 MB.

Don't work as root! You can run XSane as user and you can use GIMP as user.

Why Knoppix-installation for an unexperienced user? Knoppix for example has no security updates.
