Good morning / afternoon

DVD Knoppix 6.7.1 NOT Available after RE_installing Grub

My situation in 11 steps with a Laptops

I- PREVIOUSLY on my HDD with Windows Bootloader written by the last installed
MS-Windows_OS:
1°) 2 bootable MS_WINDOWS partitions (hda1 and hda3 )
2°) Some other FAT_32 partitions.
3°) 1 partition (hda6) KAELLA 3.2 (French adapted translation of KNOPPIX 5.1.1*)
accessible ONLY via device fd0 (disk 1"44 Mo)... when I am NOT TOO LAZY to
Plug an USB drive FD !!!! ....

II- MARVELLOUS MIRACLE:
4°) I Discover the Miraculous (DVD_Knoppix_6.7.1) CHEATCODE "GRUB" on
Booting!
5°) I Become ABLE to access ALL my Bootable Partitions:
a)- hda1 (and hda3) via the OLD GRUB installed by KAELLA KNOPPIX
b)- And My KAELLA ....WITHOUT using fd0 (1"44 Mo) !!!!

III-ACCIDENT (uncomprehensible...)
6°) I try ro repaire the "WINDOWS boot" via the original CD with NO SUCCESS.
7°) "GRUB" ...becomes UNAVAILABLE !
8°) Also even the DVD 6.7.1 itself !!!!......PANIC!!!!
9°) I Re_Install "the Kaella GRUB.
10) All Hd Partitions become Accessible..Good!
11) But NEVER the DVD 7.1 and This is my REAL Problem:
a)- I always need the DVD for the programms and maintenance eventually.
b)- I CANNOT iNSTALL 6.7.1 on my HDD after TESTING.

This my 1st POST, maybe I have been TOO LONG,and / or unprecise.
I am sorry and know very few, almost nothing about KNOPPIX_OS.
I am looking for BOOKS.

Thanks you and please note the 11-b (III) (6.7.1 still not installed on HDD).

10) All Hd Partitions become Accessible..Good!
11) But NEVER the DVD 7.1 and This is my REAL Problem:If you want access to your DVD, it's a BIOS problem, not of grub. The BIOS setup offers the option to select the drive, which you want first to boot from. Otherwise the BIOS startup offers the option (perhaps [F8] or [F12]) to select the boot device.

Thanks you Mr Werner

It's not a Bios Problem. All my other Bootable CD/DVD boot fine without using any Button Option..
This happens ONLY with the "6.7.1_Knoppix_DVD" ...
Even with the booting option button !!!!

Booting on This DVD return automatically and systematically to "the last installed GRUB".
So having never installed "6.7.1_Knoppix" I never more ENJOY the programs included.
I am forced to use the other "Knoppix versions" specifically the good 6.4.4_DVD.

I think there is some automatic relation between the 3 points below:
a)- The CHEATCODE "GRUB" proposed by the" 6.7.1_DVD"
b)- A supposed "HD_Installed_6.7.1_Knoppix"
c)- Booting on The VERY "6.7.1_DVD" which MAY probably CALL the "HD_GRUB"...

"Probable 1st Explanation" (?):
Once "HD_installed"....no need of The DVD logically !!!!
"I HAVE NEVER INSTALLED the 6.7.1_Knoppix on my HD !!!!

IF SOMEONE HAVE AN "HD_6.7.1_INSTALLED HE COULD TRY TO BOOT ON THE VERY
"6.7.1_DVD".
IF ALL GOES WELL THEN MY PROBLEM MAY BE RELATED WITH THE VERSION OF "GRUB" USED BY THE "KAELLA VERSION" (SOME INCOMPATIBILITY ?"

Thanks you very much and receive my best greetings.

Please test integritiy of DVD (6.7.1) with Knoppix cheatcode:
knoppix testcd

Thanks Mr Werner
That's THE problem.I thought to this idea at the very beginning.
But to use the Cheatcode "TESTCD" I MUST Stay ON the "6.7.1_DVD Programs" !...which is the VERY problem.
I cannot STAY on THIS DVD to Test its integrity and enjoy ONCE MORE its good Programs.
Finally I project to burn another DVD...Perhaps my DVD is corrupted somewhere (physically, although
I have detected nothing).
I shall tell you more in about one week.If the problem is persistant then I shall conclude to
a "minor bug ...perhaps voluntarily to leave free the DVD DRIVE....if "HD_installed".
Thanks you and greetings.

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean with
But to use the Cheatcode "TESTCD" I MUST Stay ON the "6.7.1_DVD Programs" I have a Knoppix HD installation and a Knoppix DVD 6.7.1 inserted within my CD/DVD player.

At boottime I start DVD from BIOS - no problem, Knoppix from DVD starts, not from HD installation.

If I use cheatcode "knoppix testcd" at boottime - sha1sums will be calculated - no errors.

If you get any error message at this time, your DVD is worthless.

Mr Werner
You write:
"I have a Knoppix HD installation and a Knoppix DVD 6.7.1 inserted within my CD/DVD player."

That is my situation....as whenever i wish to boot from CD/DVD
You write next:
"At boottime I start DVD from BIOS - no problem, Knoppix from DVD starts, not from HD installation."

In that situation,my boot is ok but I do'nt get knoppix from DVD and I am redirected
to "Grub"
(probably imposed as "Default"? This is an affair of experts and not of a "new" like me.
I do not exclude an improbable "virus" also

More (and worse) the "usual Microknoppix attached" does even not appear itself!
This is a good sign that the DVD has been "forgotten" by "something" (some "default parameter?)
SO:
No program from DVD. become accessible.
In particular NO cheatcode become accessible.

This situation is very strange and frustrating for it prevents me to enjoy my 6.7.1_DVD like before.
T
hanks you and best regards

P.S.
1°)- "KAELLA" uses "ReiserFileSystem"
2°)- Is it so for 6.7.1 ?
3°)- Is it worth to wonder about this?

4°) I Discover the Miraculous (DVD_Knoppix_6.7.1) CHEATCODE "GRUB" on
Booting!
7°) "GRUB" ...becomes UNAVAILABLE !Are you sure, your DVD player isn't damaged?

Mr Werner
Your quote (4°)
4°) "I Discover the Miraculous (DVD_Knoppix_6.7.1) CHEATCODE "GRUB" on
"Booting!"

corresponds to the situation before my "accident".

Getting the 6.7.1_DVD from "boot" to all the programs included was possible,easy...
as the custom with every Bootable Knoppix_CD:DVD

Your quote (7°)
7°) "GRUB" ...becomes UNAVAILABLE !

was one situation after the "accident".

Commands such as "cheatcodes" are available only when you have got the "Knppix_1st_SCREEN"
which proposes many features for "Help" (parameters for booting the real 6.7.1_OS)

I even do'nt get this SCREEN. So no parameter is possible without this "SCREEN"

My CD/DVD drive is always "ok" . I use it as long as possible for many things even to boot bootable CD/DVD_OS's
Does-it exist a way to neutralise temporarily a PARTITION (my Kaella) without destroying it?
If so I shoud probably be able to boot and get once more the Knoppix_6.7.1_OS of the DVD.
Another question which commes to me:
Perhaps
1°)- Installing "GRUB" FROM the "HD_KAELLA"
does not give the same result as
2°)- installing "GRUB" FROM the "DVD_Kaella"

I have 'eventually,to read "the lines written" by "GRUB" in each case before doing any manipulation.

Thanks you for your great disponibility.

This problem with "Grub" (?) is definitely solved...but very strangely.
As always the simplest method is the best !
I have burnt a NEW "ISO" on my same DVD....

But before that some strange facts happened and are worth to be noticed
although not important.

I-
1°)- I format (initialized) entirely my same DVD with one of my usual good programs
2°)- I burn my OLD ISO on my same DVD with this program
3°)- I boot...and obtain ABSOLUTELY nothing !!

II-
4°)- I format entirely the same DVD with another good program (K3b of KAELLA)
5°)- I burn the OLD ISO
6°)- Boot is OK but I get a TRUNCATED Knoppix_6.7.1_live DVD:
a) Numerous programs are Ok
b) Some other give nothing
Office and....system settings!!!!
III-
7°)- I format the same DVD entirely with this last good program "KAELLA's K3b"
8°)- I Download a NEW iso
9°)- I burn this one on my same DVD with this K3b
10°)-I GET MY USUAL LIVE 6.7.1_LIVE_DVD!!!!...
That was my Goal

CONCLUSION:
A_)- I do not understand WHY my OLD DVD works well only NOW !!!!
B_)- I must send my thanks to Mr WERNER who has been very kind
C_)- I must tell him that the "emoticon" which appears in one of my reply came
perhaps from an "accident"....I never use "emoticon" when I do not know my
correspondant

Nice to hear, that your problem is solved. I for myselve never use rewriteable DVD and have no experience with this. Before burning DVD I disable the screensaver; with K3b I use 4x speed and last but not least I do nothing else with the computer in this time.

Can you now use the cheatcode "knoppix testcd"?

Greetings, knp.

In regard to your post #10:

Emoticons are called 'smilies' on this forum.
Apparently these are 'on' by default, but can be turned off.
I'm occasionally embarrassed by them myself. See:

http://knoppix.net/forum/faq.php?faq=vb3_reading_posting#faq_vb3_smilies

Cheers.

Mr Werner
As promised I told you about my problem in my last post.
The cheatcode "Testcd" (and even "Testdvd") works ok.
On one other way "memtest" has never worked on my laptop even with "the 6.4.4_DVD"
without creating any problem until today.
Finally my "bad english" lacks suitable vocabulary to explain you the real problem.
By "...Stay on the DVD..." I meant "booting on the DVD and getting "then Knoppix_live_DVD"
OS_program.
Especially the "1st screen proposing boot options like all cheatcodes.
That was absolutly impossible.

Best greetings.

Thanks you Utu.

Not only I learn the good vocabulary "smileys" but your link teach me a few on
the "until_not_clear_for_me" notions of:
1°)- "Post"...Especially "New Post" which I never see since my 1st one (this "thread" ?)
2°)- "Thread". Especially "Subscribing" (Does exist "Unsbscribing" ?)
What is the real difference between these two notions ("POST" and "THREAD") ?

My "bad English" is necessarily very "imprecise" to formulate my questions
But I'am learning
Best greetings

Greetings again, knp.

These are my understanding of the terms you ask about:

A "post" is one complete message on the forum.
I am answering your post #14.

A "thread" is a series of these messages all on the same subject.
Such as: post #1 + post #2 + ... + post #14, for example.

Post #1 was a "new" post which established the subject.

"Subscribing" is adding oneself to a list to be notified of additional
postings on a given thread. "Un-subscribing" is asking to be removed
from the list to be notified. Notification is via e-mail.

Regards,
-utu

Good evening utu
Thanks you for your good explanations.
I returned to my "school english" to "recall thread" as somewhat an "abstract analog" of the physically one used by "my taylor" !
