The LinuxTag 2003 Knoppix DVD will be Knoppix 4 I think, because the background image has "Knoppix 4".

http://www.knoppix.net/images/k4.jpg

It has 3.8GB of software! ( that uncompressed, compressed it is 1.5GB ) and 2000+ packages.

It is just as fast as the CD version ( some had suggested it would be slower )

I will be editing this post later when I do some more testing, so this is an incomplete post.

It said "Not for distribution" on the splash screen. I'm guessing that is becasue of the LinuxTag content that will be added onto the DVD version.

Report :

- New background is nice

- I don't like the KDE splash screen. I think the usual KDE splash screen should be used ( the KDE people at linuxtag might get offended? ) - also the splash still says 3.2

- Right click and "rotate image" fails silenty if tried on the image onthe CD ( because it's read only I'm guessing )

- nothing happens when I click on "Twisted instand messenger (2.2)" in the K Menu

- index.html Knoppix Info page still says 3.2, and links to the General Knoppix packages list, which will be different for the DVD version

- maybe instead of in the boot up "Knoppix Live-Linux-CD" it shoud be "Knoppix Live-Linux-DVD"

- I tried booting with desktop=xfce4 and at first I thought it was broken becasue nothing happened, but then I middle clicked and got a menu. I'm not sure what xfce4 is usually like becasue I have never used it before, but even when I did get the middle click menu working all I could get to run was the terminal

- the pointer in gnome ( when you boot with desktop=gnome ) is a much better size. If that pointer could be used with KDE that would be cool

- There is no "KNOPPIX" menu in the gnome menu. It is accessable via "kde menu -> knoppix" in the gnome menu however.

I'll go through the K menu items and report on issues :

- applications->databases->postgresql - pops up a dialoug with "which database?" - I have no idea! I don't think this should be in the menu

- applications->emulators->bochs - nothing happens when I click on this

- development -> Kdevelop really needs the QT Editor ( which isn't installed ) to be really useful imho

- development - >xrced : nothing happens

- parts of openoffice in German ( File menu -> new -> german here ) - maybe in more places too, but I only checked there becasue that is where I have seen it before.

- kpovmodeler is useless without povray

- there are 2 menu entries for QT parted in K->System

more later

The slow version would have been uncompressed....

Good Day All

The DVD is excellent. My main question was response speed
when operating from the DVD -- since my interest is live CD/DVD
use with no hard drive. My initial feeling is that the speed of
execution is comparable to the CD version. The speed number
rating of the DVD playback devices is unclear to me.

I did not know much about burning a DVD. I traveled 250 miles
to the University where they had one DVD burner on an
apple type computer. I purchased some disks but soon
found out that there are at least 3 types of blank disks.
I had gotten DVD+R and had to return them and get DVD-R.

Once burned, I found that not all DVD drives will play them.
Luckily our newer test computers had new DVD drives and
they worked great. So DVD has some maturing to do
before they are in standard use.

But I do not want to discourage the DVD movement in KNOPPIX.
Yes, knoppix is a Volkswagen movement. Perusing several
different formats may be problematic -- but the many new programs
and many possibilities on the DVD is makes it a fantastic medium.
I certainly vote for the DVD version being kept up to date.

Perhaps someone can tell us more about current DVD technology.

How do I run KNOPPIX says to make an English boot disk use
rawrite2 –f boot-en.img –d A
I do not find a file named boot-en.img
But I have the English DVD and the boot.img file did make an
English version.
===> solution: include the file or delete the instruction. From the
shell using dd if=/mnt/cdrom/KNOPPIX/boot.img of=/dev/fd0
may also be useful for those already having linux running.

Hi MightyHeretic

I still use the 2003 LinuxTag DVD but I do not
know if it is still downloadable. It was a great
idea. The 2004 DVD has been issued in Germany
but I do no know if it can be downloaded.

If you have a DVD burner as a second CD/DVD
drive -- you may want to beta test a script called
grow-knoppix. This script will make any KNOPPIX
CD into a boot-able DVD. You can easily add your
content and settings with no remastering or intermediate
.ios file.

Also available for testing is a version of
knoppix called kanotix. There is a good support forum
and the developer is available for discussing testing.
KANOTIX BUG HUNTER 05/2004 was just release
today.

Thanks for your interest in the open-software movement.

Hi all,
Sorry I do not see how to edit.

Well, Bug Hunter 6 was to be released today, but I
do not see it posted yet. It will be out in a day or
so, so I would wait for the new one. Then we can
look for all the new bugs. ;-)

Best Wishes,

I still use the 2003 LinuxTag DVD but I do not
know if it is still downloadable.

I have a question on the Knoppix DVD. When I go to the mirror sites, I see two text files. One named “packages” and one named “packages-dvd”. My main reason for wanting the DVD is there is something that this text file claims to be in the DVD (Evolution 1.4) that I want. On the mirror sites I have scanned, there is an ISO image for CD but none for DVD.
“Where do I find the ISO image that reflects “packages-dvd”?
