Dear Forum members:

I just purchased a used copy of Linux All-In-One Desk Reference that comes bundled with a bonus DVD and in it is a Knoppix directory:

There is NO mention of creating a LiveCD or LiveUSB of the Knoppix directory listed above.

Q: Is there any way to create a Live 'backup' version, from the information provided?

Kind Regards,
luther

I think the first question would be if the bonus DVD is already bootable.

It seems that the files necessary for a KNOPPIX 4.0.2 live CD are included. Therefore it should be possible to create an ISO image that could be used to burn your own KNOPPIX 4.0.2 live CD.

Dear klaus2008:

The bonus DVD has many 'soft' errors, but has booted to a prompt, where knoppix 4.0.2 can be launched. The included 'Debian-31r1-i386-binary-2.iso' was burnt, but the created LiveCD did not boot! The purpose of this post is to create a KNOPPIX 4.0.2 ISO image, which was not on the bonus DVD.

My attempt to create a Legal backup of the bonus DVD failed to boot, also:

dd if=dev/sr0 of=linux_aio.img

cdrecord dev=/dev/sr0 speed=1 linux_aio.img

ISO LINUX: DISK ERROR 80, AX=4259, DRIVE 9F
BOOT FAILED: PRESS A KEY TO RETRY . . .

I need an older version of Knoppix, like 4.0.2, to boot on older hardware that does not have a DVD-ROM. Therefore, any clues to create an ISO image of this Knoppix 4.0.2 directory?

Regards,
luther

$PFAD/knx/master/KNOPPIX/modules:
You can try to sort the files from your DVD like this pattern. Now use from Remaster HowTo (http://knoppix.net/wiki/Knoppix_Remastering_Howto) the last part

#! /bin/sh
# Path to partition you will work on
PFAD="/media/sda1"
# Update the file hashes used by the "testcd" boot option
cd $PFAD/knx/master ; find -type f -not -name \
sha1sums -not -name boot.cat -not \
-name isolinux.bin -exec sha1sum '{}' \; > KNOPPIX/sha1sums
# Create new Knoppix ISO
genisoimage -l -r -J -V "KNOPPIX" \
-b boot/isolinux/isolinux.bin -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 \
-boot-info-table -c boot/isolinux/boot.cat \
-o $PFAD/knx/remastered.iso $PFAD/knx/master
Set the variable "PFAD" as you need it. Perhaps this will work?

@luther:

I don't think you have to sort the files.

I think it would be a good idea to create a new directory 'knx402' on an HDD. In that directory create a subdirectory 'master'.
Copy the directory KNOPPIX and its subdirectories from the DVD to the 'master' directory.

In a terminal change to the 'knx402' directory and remove the file master/KNOPPIX/isolinux/boot.cat
Use the program genisoimage to create a bootable ISO image.

genisoimage -l -r -J -V "KNOPPIX" -b KNOPPIX/isolinux/isolinux.bin -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -c KNOPPIX/isolinux/boot.cat -o ./knx402.iso ./master
Burn the new ISO image on a CD-R and try it out.

I hope that helps.

Dear klaus2008:

I have a functional LiveUSB KNOPPIX 7.0.3, created from the CD footprint. If you could provide more details on mounting the HDD (sda1) and the complete path to the 'knx402' directory on it, would be helpful, since my background is bloated windows.

I would like to do everything from the Knoppix 7.0.3 root, so Standards are kept. Would this be your preferred syntax, to burn the new ISO:

cdrecord dev=/dev/sr0 speed=1 /dev/sda1/knx402/knx402.iso

Dear klaus2008: The 'boot catalog' directory is a requirement, that is missing:
knoppix@Microknoppix:~$ sudo genisoimage -l -r -J -V "KNOPPIX" -b KNOPPIX/isolinux/isolinux.bin -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -c KNOPPIX/isolinux/boot.cat -o ./knx402.iso /media/sda1/knx402/master
I: -input-charset not specified, using utf-8 (detected in locale settings) genisoimage: Uh oh, I cant find the boot catalog directory 'KNOPPIX/isolinux' !
knoppix@Microknoppix:~$ Can this error flag dialog be rectified? Please verify the above genisoimage syntax . . . Yours, luther

Hi, luther!

I mounted Knoppix 4.0.2 CD with the filemanager. Its mount point was /media/sr0. My HDD was mounted at /media/sda1.
I opened a root terminal and issued

mkdir -p /media/sda1/knx402/master
cp -a /media/sr0/* /media/sda1/knx402/master
cd /media/sda1/knx402
mv master/boot/isolinux master/KNOPPIX
rm master/KNOPPIX/isolinux/boot.cat
rmdir master/boot
mkisofs -l -r -J -V "KNOPPIX" -o knx402.iso -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -b KNOPPIX/isolinux/isolinux.bin -c KNOPPIX/isolinux/boot.cat master
Booting from this new ISO image was impossible. I got an error message from isolinux.

I rebooted Knoppix 7.0.3 CD, mounted my HDD, opened a root terminal and changed to /media/sda1/knx402. I issued

mkdir master/boot
mv master/KNOPPIX/isolinux master/boot/
mkisofs -l -r -J -V "KNOPPIX" -o knx402.iso -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -b boot/isolinux/isolinux.bin -c boot/isolinux/boot.cat master
This time it was possible to boot from this ISO image.

Now I am convinced that isolinux expects the linux image in the directory boot/isolinux, but does not search in another directory like KNOPPIX/isolinux.

After you have booted Knoppix from USB you can use the filemanager to mount your HDD. I suppose it is mounted at /media/sda1.

The bonus DVD can also be mounted using the filemanager. I suppose that you can find its root directory at /media/sr0.

Then I would open a root terminal and issue the following commands.

mkdir -p /media/sda1/knx402/master
cp -a /media/sr0/KNOPPIX /media/sda1/knx402/master
cd /media/sda1/knx402
mkdir master/boot
mv master/KNOPPIX/isolinux master/boot/
rm master/boot/isolinux/boot.cat
mkisofs -l -r -J -V "KNOPPIX" -o knx402.iso -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -b boot/isolinux/isolinux.bin -c boot/isolinux/boot.cat master
Burn the new ISO image on a CD-R and try it out.

Any clue about the root cause of this catistrophic I/O Error? Also, what can be done to eliminate text formatting problems, when posting? It is VERY FRUSTRATING!

It took less than a minute to create the ISO image file.

You can find a link for downloading Knoppix 4.0.2 at http://www.distromania.com/distro_info.php?distro=332

I think possible reasons for I/O errors are a dirty or damaged DVD-ROM medium and a dirty DVD-ROM drive.
You could try to clean the DVD with water and some dishwashing detergent.
If there are serious scratches you could try some polishing paste that is intended for the repair of CD or DVD surfaces.

Hi,

I have always used a bloated windows app to verify ISO integrity.

Q: Using Knoppix 7.0.3 LiveUSB, what is the correct indexing used to check the following MD5:

KNOPPIX 4.0.2 MD5_Sum:

Thanks for getting me wise to the archive of all Linux Distributions, klaus2008!

In the terminal you can use the program md5sum
md5sum KNOPPIX_V4.0.2CD-2005-09-23-EN.iso

Dear klaus2008:

Once I pluged in the complete path, verification proved a valid ISO:
Q: Is there a way to see which directories are in the path?
I thought the 'Desktop', by default, was.

Q2: Can 'Desktop' be added to the path?

knoppix@Microknoppix:~$ md5sum /home/knoppix/Desktop/KNOPPIX_V4.0.2CD-2005-09-23-EN.iso

I'm geting a sense Linux has compatibility issues with this burner:

Vendor_info : 'PIONEER '

The reason being I get the LiveCD to boot initially, then down-the-road, the boot freezes!

Your feelings?

Hi,

The created ISO did boot OK, BUT shutdown sequence trapped this error:

# ./etc/init.d/knoppix-reboot: line 51: /usr/bin/usleep: input/output error

I have never had this problem with Knoppix LiveUSB.

Q: Can this LiveCD be converted to a LiveUSB?

Do you still get the I/O error if you use the cheatcode acpi=off ?
knoppix acpi=off
Q: Is there a way to see which directories are in the path?
I thought the 'Desktop', by default, was. There are two kinds of paths. The first one is the search path used by the shell to find an application. This path can be shown by issuing
echo $PATH The other kind of path is specific for an application. There are programs using a list of directories wherein they look for data files, but in most cases a program must be told where it finds the files it has to work on. Usually the data search path of an application is defined in a configuration file. The program md5sum does not use a configuration file or an environment variable for the data search path. Therefore you have to describe the path of the data file if it is not in the current directory.

[QUOTE=klaus2008;129319]

mkdir -p /media/sda1/knx402/master

Hey Klaus2008!

The code you posted above, only creates the '/knx402' directory, using Knoppix LiveUSB 7.0.3!

Shouldn't it have crested the subdirectory '/master', too?

luther

klaus2008

The command 'mkdir' creates a directory. If you use the switch '-p' the program creates missing parents if necessary. Thus the command
mkdir -p /home/knoppix/dir1/dir2/dir3 should create the directory dir1 in the home directory, a sub directory /home/knoppix/dir1/dir2 and a sub sub directory /home/knoppix/dir1/dir2/dir3. The command
ls -Rl /home/knoppix/dir1 should show the new directories.

Hey Klaus2008!

Could you run the above code in a root terminal and post your keystrokes?

It appears this HDD only acceps the first directory.

Hi,

A re-burn of the bonus DVD Knoppix directory BOOTS, after a few subtle tweaks:

What I'm noticing with 4.0.2, is that accessing the HDD cannot be done, using the LiveCD.

Therefore, I'd be curious to see if a LiveUSB version, with persistance can be written to a thumb drive from the CD. Does anybody know how/if this can be done?

Hi,

UNetbootin wrote knx402.iso to thumb drive, yet boot hung, trapping this error:

# FATAL: KERNEL TOO OLD

Q: Can this error be resolved with a simple cheatcode?

Q2: What alternate methods can be used to install knx402.iso to thumb drive?
