I've had NO luck getting ndiswrapper to function, when told to use it to install the tp-link wn353g driver for windows 98se.

Q: Should I be using the windows XP WiFi driver instead?

Consult /var/lib/dkms/ndiswrapper/1.57/build/make.log for more information. What does this file say?

I would suggest that you download and install ndiswrapper from the testing branch.
ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.58-2_i386.deb (http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/n/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.58-2_i386.deb), ndiswrapper-dkms_1.58-2_all.deb (http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/n/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper-dkms_1.58-2_all.deb), ndiswrapper-common_1.58-2_all.deb (http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/n/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper-common_1.58-2_all.deb)

I think you should try drivers made for Windows 2000 or XP.

Hi,

link (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=228&product=1845524&sw_lang=)

This particular notebook came with the Broadcom b43 XP driver installed, NO CD!

Q: Is there a way to hunt down the .INF driver file[s], used by ndiswrapper?

luther

klaus2008

I think it is possible to find the driver files in the subdirectories of the windows system directory. But why don't you download the driver from HP's web site you mentioned above?

You could open the page Broadcom Wireless LAN Drivers (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-41607-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=228&product=1845524&sw_lang=) in your web browser and download the file sp33008.exe. Once you have got the driver archive file you can try the following.
Create a new directory and copy the file sp33008.exe there.
Open an LXTerminal and change to that directory.
Use 7z to extract the files from sp33008.exe.
7z x sp33008.exe
You will find many new files in the directory including a .inf and some .sys files.

I hope that helps.

It was written that ndiswrapper-1.58 should be compatible with Linux kernels 3.2 to 3.8. However, the version provided by the packages from the Debian testing branch seems to be incompatible with Knoppix kernel 3.4.4.

On http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/files/stable/ you can download the source of the latest version 1.59.

After you have downloaded ndiswrapper-1.59.tar.gz you should open an LXTerminal and change to the directory containing this file. Before you try to compile and to install the new ndiswrapper the old packages have to be removed from the system if they are installed.
sudo apt-get purge ndiswrapper-dkms ndiswrapper-common ndiswrapper-utils-1.9
Now it is time to extract the new source
tar xzf ndiswrapper-1.59.tar.gz
cd ndiswrapper-1.59
make
sudo make install There is a file called INSTALL describing the installation and usage of ndiswrapper.

I hope that helps.

luther
12-11-2013, 03:32 AM
tar xzf ndiswrapper-1.59.tar.gz
cd ndiswrapper-1.59
make
sudo make install
I hope that helps.

Hi,

Synaptic Package Manager cannot find the compiled 1.59 binary.

Q1: Where is the 1.59 make.log?

Q2: How can 1.59 be purged from the system, for replacement?

luther

klaus2008
12-11-2013, 09:53 AM
You did not use the Debian package management system. For this reason Synaptic Package Management does not know the newly installed binaries.

A1: There is no logfile. If there was no error during compile you do not need one.

A2: Change to the directory with ndiswrapper sources (ndiswrapper-1.59) and issue
sudo make uninstall

Btw. you could create your personal packages, but if the ndiswrapper 1.59 does not work with your Windows driver it would not be worth the effort.
