PLEASE CHECK AND RETRY' /etc/init.d/xsession start.
I do not no any linux commands, although I see on this site their is a section on commands, so I can check that out.
Anyway my computer is a steam train no make that a horse drawn carridge.
Its specifcations are:

While I won't say it's impossible I will say it's unlikely that you'll ever get Knoppix to boot on that much RAM. You really need a minimum of 96M for a desktop environment- I would suggest at least 128M and using the icewm desktop as KDE will be very slow on only 128. Open Office would take two days to load on 128M RAM too.

I don't think it's completely a memory problem. I've gotten X to start on as little as 32mb (maybe less) and run KDE and icewm. Of course I also created a reasonable sized swap space before I did this. You should have received a message that you needed to create some swap space on your windows partition before starting X. Did you do this?

I've had the same thing happen. aay is correct though. It should let you know that it needs a swap file and that it's trying to create one. When this happened to me it was actually failing just before or right at that point.
