Hello,
After finding out that the knoppix-terminalserver of Knoppix 7.3.0
is rejecting the 64bits config because different kernel modules
need to be loaded, I modified the init script to fix this issue and
created some kind of a "universal" minirt.gz replacement which
can be used for all boot configurations: normal cd/dvd boot,
usb boot, hdd boot (including from ntfs), pxe boot (nfs or smb),...
I also added some other very useful modules when running under
virtualisation like vmware: BusLogic.ko mptbase.ko mptscsih.ko
mptspi.ko and of course the ptp.ko pps_core.ko besides all the
network 32 and 64 bits kernel modules for the pxe network boot.
Best Regards,
Gilles

Hello,
I finally got the latest VMwareTools-9.6.1-1378637.tar.gz (VMWare Workstation 10.0.1)
to compile with the Linux Kernel 3.13.0 and run properly on the latest Knoppix 7.3.0 using
https://github.com/rasa/vmware-tools-patches
except that the very useful /mnt/hgfs shared folder does dot work properly:
ls -al /mnt/hgfs ==> ls: cannot open directory /mnt/hgfs: Not a directory
All suggestions are welcome (besides waiting for the next VMware Tools release)
Thanks,
Gilles

Hello,
I am trying to get 3D rendering (compiz) with Knoppix 7.3.0 under VMware (Knoppix as a Linux guest)
using my script: http://s94002264.onlinehome.us/grub/k730/debug/build_3d.sh.txt
So far everything builds now but 3D still does not work as I got it working previously for previous Knoppix, cf:
http://knoppix.net/forum/showthread.php?11589-ISO-boot-from-FAT-NTFS-USB-%28GRUB-exe-grldr-from-boot-ini%29&p=129607&viewfull=1#post129607
All helps and suggestions are welcome.
Best Regards,
Gilles

Any idea when we will see a downloadable release of 7.3x?

.
Last year's March 2013 CeBIT version of Knoppix
was not replaced by 7.2.0 until June 27, 2013.

Any chance to download it anywhere?
Can't anyone create a torrent?
I want 7.3.0 as it introduces experimental uefi boot, which I'd love to try.

Greetings, ramoncio.

You might see how Knoppix 7.2 works with UEFI while we are waiting for the 'Community Edition'
of Knoppix 7.3 to arrive.

FYI: Knoppix 7.2.0 Release Notes on Klaus K's site includes the following:
Experimental support for UEFI-Boot (DVD: 32 and 64bit, CD: only 32bit) after installation
on USB flash disk.

And, there has been some Knoppix 7.2.0 UEFI discussion on this forum which you might audit
if you haven't already done so. 'UEFI' in the forum Advanced Search box gives seven entries
in addition to your post.

Is it possible to buy a copy of Knoppix 7.3.0 anyplace? I read that it has not been released to the public yet for download.

Greetings, buymystock .

The CeBIT version of Knoppix usually appears in March or so,
and is usually a feature of Linux Magazin in Europe or Linux Magazine in
the US. These magazines cost about $10 and usually contain a DVD version of Knoppix.

Some of us wait a few months for the 'Community Edition' which often
corrects a few problems of the CeBIT version, and is free for the download.

I've not bought Knoppix this way, but you might check out the following:

To my knowledge, the only way to get an official copy of 7.3 is either with the March 2014 issue of Linux Magazine or by attending CBit. Best I can tell, the following link is to the page on Linux Magazine's website regarding the copy included with the magzine, but I have not been able to find any information on how to order a copy: http://www.linux-magazine.com/Issues/2014/161/This-Month-s-DVD Though you would think someone with a copy would have made an iso and torrented it. The absence of public betas is one thing I miss from Ubuntu and vanilla Debian, but I am stuck with Knoppix since its Adriane variant appears to be the only well-known distro that is blind accessible out of the box.

.
The CeBIT DVD is likely copyrighted and moreover likely contains additional material,
beyond the Knoppix material,
for which a DVD owner has no rights to distribute.

I'm sure you mean well, Jeffery, but
the suggestion for someone to torrent their copy is not well-advised IMO.

Hi UTU,
Thanks for the response; I have not bought Knoppix this way either. It's a very good marketing strategy for Linux Magazine to offer the 7.3 DVD with their sequential periodical. I'll take the option of waiting a few months for the 'Community Edition' because I like its subsequent edited version which often corrects a few problems that may be found in the earlier CeBIT edition. I appreciate your answer, UTU.
Blessings

Here's a new clue as to when the 'Community Edition' might be available:
a French offer of Knoppix 7.3 with an offering date of May 31. Find this at:

Greetings, UTU,
I may send out for the DVD from the French company mentioned in your reply.
It costs a little over $10.00 in United States Dollars (USD) currency. The link works for me. They give their complete mailing address for payment with 3 or 4 day waiting period for DVD to arrive after payment is received in their office. Much gratitude, "utu".
Blessings

Greetings, buymystock.

I expect free downloads may be available on about this same time scale,
unless Klaus K finds something he wants to correct first.

I would love to meet Klaus K or get a personal email from him; he's awe-inspiring and incredible! Naturally, his operating systems are too! I have been fortunate enough to have discovered and practiced using his Knoppix OS since version 2.2, more than a decade ago; at that time, I quickly and successfully weaned myself off of microsoft's detritus rubbish.

Not a real meeting with K. Knopper, but perhaps you would like to see him at CeBIT 2012

or at Cebit 2014 (German language only!)

Hello again, buymystock.

I'm also fond of both Klaus K and his Knoppix product.
Your join date shows you've been at this longer than I have. Congratulations.

My observation is that Klaus K does not frequent this forum, except rarely.
He has not been very active even on his own forum lately, at least publicly,
as you can see at:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-knoppix/2014

I think Klaus K does monitor his own forum, however, and will most likely respond
to specific questions there, if the questions are reasonable and pertinent, and
almost certainly if you've found a legitimate problem that needs his attention.

Werner points out that Klaus K may be seen on some past CeBIT sessions giving
lectures there in both English and German.

Hi Werner,
I am enjoying the video's from the links that you sent me! Viel Dank und Anerkennung! I will need to translate the German language video at CeBIT 2014; I cannot hear as well as I'd like to, however, when Klaus K speaks English, I can understand him better than many of the people that I've known for 30 years who ONLY speak English. Amazing.
Viel Dank und Anerkennung!

Hi "utu" anew!
Thanks for being so helpful, in addition to your well-mannered congratulatory expressive regarding my very good fortune of discovering Knoppix! This link to "lists.debian.org/debian-knoppix/2014 (https://lists.debian.org/debian-knoppix/2014)" is a delight, with technical information from Klaus K that is presented in such a way as to allow easy and accurate perception. Archives starting in May of 2001 and leading through the years and months (2001--2014) are especially charming to me and to countless millions of people that have a strong interest in Knoppix (to such a degree that it causes some changes in their lifestyles in order to accommodate their loyalty to this outstanding Debian designed operating system).

:D:):-D Greetings, utu,
This is great! I am able to hear and understand the
professor while he speaks in the English language during
the recent CeBIT gathering as I click on the link that you sent me.
Merriment and well-being will certainly follow the faithful and
unwavering Knoppix apostles!
