Dear forum members and moderators,

I am aware that Knoppix needs revenue to run, and it generates it from advertisements.

But please understand that Google is incapable of deciding what to advert and what not to, and sometimes the entire advert. thing doesn't just care.

And these adverts are aware of my IP address, so provides a location-based link!

I was led to the following page this way, not once, but twice to the following site with an explicit topless woman enticing people to register.

One of that was when we were having our family time together. I am posting the site here. Please investigate.

Hello Raijb,

which advert of Knoppix do you mean? On the webpage of "knoppix.net/forum" I cannot see any advertisement.

Greetings Werner

Hi, Mr. Schulz!
Sometimes it's present, sometimes, not. But I hope other members will also say the same.
It particularly happens when you don't write the url knoppix.net/forum on the search panel and let google do it. Then when the forum page link is clicked we get this adverts. But other times too, we get the adverts.
Please enquire.
Regards,
Rajib

And I shall elaborate: Maybe, if you use Iceweasel you won't, because NoScript blocks scripts. There are a few scripts running on Knoppix, like google-analytics and yahooapi. Google is known to raise revenue from advert to provide us with free services, and many mischief-makers use google loopholes, like manipulating ranks, push-ads, etc.
But Chrome doesn't block any scripts.
Since I have noted the issue, I thought it imperative to make the members aware.
Regards

Yes, my history pages show the following scripts redirecting me from google to the two sites, and this happens very fast :

Google search:

https://www.google.co.in/search?q=knoppix+forum&oq=knoppix+forum&aqs=chrome.0.57j62l3.2715j0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

From there,

(2) http://3hne9tnvoe3cjbe17gt06jm.1300bathroom.com.au/forum.php?bvgskf=1&aid=2&atr=dirs&src=76

Forum, beware! I have seen adverts on Knoppix pages, which Mr. Schulz says he hasn't seen. So we need to be alert and proactive.

"knoppix.net/forum" is an URL and people have to write it in the address line of their browser and not in the search line of Google.

I'm sorry, it will be "Address panel" not "search panel",or "Address Bar" my error while typing.

Sometimes, I lazily write "Knoppix Forum" and the Topic Thread Title partially on the Address panel. Automatically, the query is sent to google search engine. I usually click on the link on the google page and am redirected to the thread. Bad practice, I know.

Better would be through knoppix.net/forum then through Find latest posts or Find latest started threads and go to the thread. But as you would say, Old Habits Die Hard! :-( Human nature :-( , still I succumb to it.

@ rajibando

You aren't alone! I was also redirected to somewhere else while trying to access the forum via the link (http://knoppix.net/forum/forums/3-The-Knoppix-net-Forums) provided by Google today. In fact, it has happened to me quite a few times within these 2-3 months; Adult Friend Finder is the website I have seen most often. The most bizarre thing was that the same link could take me to the forum at the 2nd attempt (going back and forth). At one point, I thought I was delusional as I couldn't find other folks had mentioned it in the forum, so I decided to keep my mouth zipped up till today.

@ Werner

If I visit the link (http://knoppix.net/forum) as a guest, there is an eBay's logo shown at the bottom left corner of the page. Not quite sure if it's considered as an advert.

@ Administrator

There isn't a persistent overlay running on my Knoppix box, and visiting the forum was the very first thing I have done after booting up at around 2pm (BST). When I visited the forum directly via http://knoppix.net/forum, I was told that the website was under construction (can't remember the exact wording) and saw the animation showing a yellow guy banging his head on the keyboard. Afterwards, I turned to Google and used the link (http://knoppix.net/forum/forums/3-The-Knoppix-net-Forums) to visit the forum, and that's the point which I was redirected to elsewhere. Hope this info could be of any help to narrow down the cause.

ps: Aduit Friend Finder isn't my cup of tea.... ;)

Thank you, Superman, for sharing your views. So I believe you can relax now, now that you find that you are not alone in this bizarre experience.

It isn't my cup of coffee either ... I am quite happy without those ... friends(?!)

Yes, and yet again, when I searched "Knoppix Forum" using Chromium, after removing it "History". I was led to http://filestore72.info/download.php?id=a0cd929c
It is Google which has, I assume, been hacked.

Your experiences are the result of a wrong use of a browser.

To day you cannot use a browser without a script blocker and you have to think over the permission rules for this blocker. If you dont't use a script blocker, you are the victim of Google and all the other adservers. That's your own fault.

If you know the URL of a website use the address line of your browser or bookmark it. Never type it in the search bar of Google or in the input field of any other addon-tool. Only if you don't know the URL use Google to search for it. If in doubt highlight the URL you'll get by Google with your mouse and compare it with the real URL you can see in the left bottom of the browser. It's so easy to forge an URL within HTML.

I use Iceweasel/Firefox + NoScript and AdBlock+ and I've never seen Ebay or any other advert neither at knoppix.net/forum nor at knoppixforum.de.

Please read also th last part of Privacy Statment (http://knoppix.net/about.php) (right bottom ot this Forum).

Took a snapshot of the screen after booting up the box without persistent overly, visiting this thread as a guest by typing http://knoppix.net/forum/forum.php into the address bar and then clicking on General Support > thread title > page 2.

Iceweasel --> checked
Noscript --> checked
AdBlock+ --> checked
eBay adverts --> checked, checked

Let the photo do the talking...

As a side note, once I logged in the forum, the adverts did disappear!

Frankly, I don't mind either the eBay adverts or the Adult Friend Finder but am just a bit concerned about the details of user account; there's no need to re-post the link of the Privacy Statement as I have gone through it already ;)

Missing the good old days when BBS was the most common means of sharing info online...; pure and simple...

Yes, Sir, I know that the issue is because of my own fault. We know our fallibility yet we make mistakes. But should that mean that some companies will misuse that fallibility and get away with it?
I just said that the matter could be taken up by the management. Google will listen because Knoppix is popular and together, our voices will not be ignored.

And Thank you, Superman, now that you have posted the snapshot I also remember seeing those ads myself!

Yes!
Yes, that's right! Otherwise, we would have to form a pressure group, hand over some of our powers to some of the group members, and they will gradually become more powerful, run amok and self-serve with all those powers.
Then why are we keeping ...? :-)

Serious, I have kept email notification when a new Bulletin is posted, ticked.
As I clicked on the link given on the notification it led to FileStore72.info

Yes, it talks to me: You use "Ebay adverts" and you allow "non-intrusive advertising".

Not sure if we have looked at the same snapshot I uploaded; I uploaded just one file, so we definitely are referring to the same stuff.

I don't use Ebay adverts and don't tick "allow some non-intrusive advertising". To be precisely, whether "allow some non-intrusive advertising" is ticked or not, the eBay adverts appear while visiting the forum as a guest.

Never mind!

@ Mr. Schulz
I really become puzzled, and initially can't determine whom the posts in this topic are meant. Then I understand contextually.

@Superman
You have really a nice approach, using @ like they use it in chat. Really nice!
I really like Mr. Schulz and I am saddened at the prospect of hurting him. He is such a gentleman! So it takes time for me to recover from the shock when I understand the concerned post wasn't meant for me.

Members, please see this snapshot. I followed Superman's suggestions and reloaded this page, when I woke up my system from Suspended state.

Note: I did not enter through Google! Just reloaded the same page, now as guest.

I found those ads!

And please carefully observe: The snapshot also contains which of the scripts are running on the Knoppix forum.

Really, this _is_ serious!

No need to do that. ;) Writing some confusing stuff like "eBay adverts --> checked, checked" is my bad.
For some reason, the URLs of the eBay adverts all start with knoppix.net/store/

Please look at my earlier post: http://knoppix.net/forum/threads/31424-Your-advertisement-area-leads-sometimes-to-Adult-Friend-Finder%21?p=132431&viewfull=1#post132431
I again woke the system up from Suspend and refreshed. The same scripts are running on the page.
And the adverts are being displayed.

can you check if the issue still exists? there were some old plug-ins installed that could have allowed for this redirection...

google and ebay ads should only show if you view the site as a visitor and are not logged in...

rajibando
05-22-2015, 01:44 PM
Yes, my pleasure! Here is it:
275
I use 7.2.0 by the way, because Knoppix 7.4 doesn't allow me to install NVidia drivers. And without NVidia drivers the CPU heats up and shuts itself down.

Yes, now, from the address bar knoppix.net/forum has googleadservices and ebay only.
276

277
See the mouse-cursor highlighted and link at the bottom left.
Shall I try from google.com?

rajibando
05-22-2015, 02:02 PM
But ...

Please note that googleadservices lead to various sites, as shown below: and theoretically therefore, could even to adultfriendfinder ! See below:

So this is why!!! I get my answer.

Glad it is confirmed by the site admin. Each word is worth its weight in gold.

...there were some old plug-ins installed that could have allowed for this redirection.
Not sure if the 'plug-ins installed' is referred to the plug-ins installed in KNOPPIX by default and 'this redirection' to the website of Adult Friend Finder or FileStore72.info. If so, would appreciate if the resulting plug-ins are able to be pointed out. If (big if) my memory still serves, I saw this kind of redirection for the first time while using KNOPPIX 7.4.2.

@ superman I believe you already know that Adblock plus can be updated. But can you update the NoScript?

rajibando

Manually, you don't need to. It updates by itself. But please add some more lists, like fatboy, Deutsch, etc., for safety.

Where is this plugin?

rajibando
05-23-2015, 09:10 AM
I wish to elaborate: I have observed that http://knoppix.net/forum/search.php?searchid=599211 leads to a page which shows vbulletin and vbulletin message. But I find no vbulletin. So this must be a server-side script/plug-in? Is it that when I query the query is handled by vbulletin plugin which then outputs the result?

rajibando

Yes, found the script, with help from an outstanding gentleman. problem resolved. Google is the one which creates problems. And we must remember not to visit knoppix via google search engine results. Add two lines to AdBlock and NoScript.
