I tried a couple of Knoppix versions. It boots only in text version. It says the display is generic. It's a Pentium II with 96 MB RAM. Could any one tell me how can change the display settings to start X11? During intial stages of booting it asks the display information. It provides options 0 to 9. if i choose 0, it procedds till loading x11.... and crashes. Any help will be appreciated. One more point to note here, I am able to use Windows XP on this machine.

Check out the Cheat Codes (http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/CheatCodes)

You have the bare minimum requirements for booting Knoppix. Remember that even though this machine boots XP it's also booting it from the hard drive. Knoppix lives entirely in RAM and you don't have any to spare. At minimum I would boot something like this:

boot: knoppix lang=us desktop=icewm vga=normal xvrefresh=70

Don't just use the value of 70 for xvrefresh. Use whatever your monitor is actually capable of. I just picked xvrefresh=70 out of thin air.

Get some info on your monitor and pass those values on boot. Try different combinations of the cheat codes.
