Cannot connect to wireless networks - Connection activation failed

I'm booting from a usb stick knoppix 7.7 and even if I am able to see the available wifi's I cannot connect to any of them and I get Connection activation failed - (2) Active connection removed before it was initialized

Running iwconfig I get eth1 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:off/any
