The machine is my Dell Inspiron 15" 7559 Laptop. I haven't found any other problems.

Any suggestions?

With what browser? There is a known bug with audio in Firefox 52 and later, but Chrome/Chromium should work just fine.

I haven't done anything with Knoppix 8.0 since then, and wasn't aware of the bug. I will give that a try next time I fire up that machine.
