Tonight Live: Larry Augustin on Linus and OSDL >> on The Linux Show!!

Tuesday, July 29th, 2003 from Chicago IL
Tonight LIVE on www.thelinuxshow.com.

At 6pm pt, 7pm mt, 8pm ct, and 9pm et.... Kevin Hill, Arne Flones, Doc Searls, Russ Pavlicek AND Jeff Gerhardt are all back live tonight. Just when things were getting in a grove for a nice summer, SCO does it again. We have a lively show lined up for tonight on The Linux Show!

Segment Two- Linus at OSDl & other OSDL news

Tonight we will have a conversation with our old friend Larry Augustin , of Azure Capital partners, one of the founders of the Open Source Development Lab and current board member, in a discussion about the direction of OSDL now that Linus Torvalds has joined the team.

As an OSDL fellow, Linus will work exclusively on leading the development of Linux, the open source software that he created in 1991 as a university student in Finland. Torvalds will dedicate himself now full-time to guiding a distributed team of thousands of Linux developers around the world. At OSDL, he will have hands-on access to its state-of-the-art computing resources and test facility. He will also help set priorities and direction for the Lab's different industry initiatives.

Founded in 2000, OSDL has data centers in Portland, Oregon and Yokohama, Japan used by Linux developers around the world. With investment backing from Computer Associates, Fujitsu, Hitachi, HP, IBM, Intel, NEC and others, the lab sponsors key industry projects, including industry initiatives to enhance Linux for use in corporate data centers (Data Center Linux) and in telecommunications networks (Carrier Grade Linux). OSDL is increasingly being recognized as the center-of-gravity for the Linux industry: an important and independent central body that invests in the growth and innovation of Linux for the benefit of customers.

Larry Augustin joined Azure Capital Partners in September 2002 as a Venture Partner where he specializes in software and related infrastructure technologies, and works closely with the software team in evaluating new investment opportunities. Prior to Azure, Larry was chairman of VA Software and founded the company in 1993 as a Ph.D. student in electrical engineering at Stanford University. A strong advocate of collaborative software development, Augustin was the visionary behind SourceForge.net, the largest Open Source development site on the Internet. With 460,000 users worldwide, SourceForge.net is also the largest reference implementation of VA Software's commercial SourceForge product. Before founding VA, Augustin was a research associate in the program analysis and verification group (PAVG) at Stanford University where he worked on rapid prototyping languages, software engineering, hardware verification and software prototyping environments. Prior to Stanford, he worked as a systems engineer on high-speed switched digital services at AT&T Bell Laboratories. Larry Augustin holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in electrical engineering from Stanford University, and a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame.

Yes and Knoppix was in fact mentiond on tonight's show which is nice.

Several times and in quite good terms I might add too bad about the sound cutting in and out there for a bit but I'm going to listen to the archive tomorrow.

aay
07-30-2003, 08:32 AM
Ok I was wondering if the sound was just me. I version I listened to was the archived version. It kept doing little skips, although this did not happen during the filler music. Anyway, good show.

Stephen
07-30-2003, 08:55 AM
Those skips you were getting in the archive were like loops of sound bites of about 4-5 seconds long playing over top the live show I would think, it was very, very annoying.

aay
07-30-2003, 09:10 AM
Indeed. I've found a nice way to grab the archived version after the show is over is with wget. Just use the http address found at http://thelinuxshow.com/lastweek.pls. Once you've coppied the address, just open up Konsole, type, wget -c, then use the Edit menu and Paste in the address. Works great to download the show fast.

I always use xmms to listen to the show. You can use the right arrow button to fastforward through some of the goofy music.

Tonight Live: From LinuxWorld Expo featuring IBM >> on The Linux Show!!
Tuesday, August 5th, 2003from Chicago IL
Tonight LIVE on www.thelinuxshow.com.

At 6pm pt, 7pm mt, 8pm ct, and 9pm et.... Kevin Hill, Arne Flones, Doc Searls, Russ Pavlicek AND Jeff Gerhardt are all back live tonight. We have a lively show lined up for tonight on The Linux Show that comes to you live from LinuxWorld Expo!

Segment One- The News. We will cover THE HOT NEWS of the week and the expo. Tonight on the news: There is so much news from LinuxWorld Expo we do not know what to list.
Segment Two- IBM revs up for a Linux Future- with Dan Frye

Tonight we will have a conversation with our old friend Dan Frye, Director of IBM's Technology Center. Dan has been on the show before and is well known by our regular listeners. We will discuss the expanding presence of IBM as a power house Linux vendor and freind to the Open Source community. SCO may become a part of the conversation, but we will be stressing IBM's role as a driving force for the enterprise adoption of Linux.

The Linux Technology Center ( http://www-124.ibm.com/developerworks/oss/linux/) was founded to track the various technical contributions IBM as a whole is making to Linux and related development communities. This site is hosted by the IBM Linux Technology Center whose mission is to work directly with the Linux development community with a shared vision of making Linux succeed.

Since 1999, we have been talking about the remarkable sudden redirection of IBM to take hold of Linux and Open Source and make it a core corporate business tool. This story has to be one of the most remarkable stories of a wholesale cange in corporate culture in the IT industry history. Many people (and countless inhouse geeks) were responsible for this change in course, but as co-author of the original strategy papers used by IBM on both Linux and open source, Dan Frye has to be one of the chief navigators of the changes at IBM.

Like all changes in direction, this course change has not been without storms and controversy; SCO just being the most visable to the public to date. But month by month more and more of the IBM corporate culture has been won over to the light side of the force. Now that the new course SEEMS set for IBM corp bosses, Frye has changed his own course from in-house advocate to coordinating open source developments with IBM and assuring smooth relations with the community at large. As Director of the Linux Technology Center, Dan works directly with a number of differing Linux development projects transforming linux into a practical business reality for IBM clients, and the entire linux community. IBM is very active in community development hosting a number of project out on Sourceforge and is a sponsor member of the Open Source Development Lab (see last weeks show with Larry.).

What has impressed us most here at TLS is that IBM has not just talked a good game, but they have peformed and lived up to every commitment with the Open SOurce community. A great deal of the good work is due to the good start down the path delivered at the hands of Dan Frye.

Tonight Live: Happy Birthday Linux Today and Microsoft Throws a "Hissy Fit" >> on The Linux Show!!

At 6pm pt, 7pm mt, 8pm ct, and 9pm et.... Kevin Hill, Arne Flones, Doc Searls, Russ Pavlicek AND Jeff Gerhardt are all back live tonight. We have a lively show lined up for tonight.

Segment One- The News. We will cover THE HOT NEWS of the week including: Microsoft Gets pissed off at Lindows again (refunds made easy), Former Caldera CEO Ransom Love pans SCO CEOs tactics, Sharps goal for the Zaurus to concur the world, and way more.

Segment Two- Happy Birthday Linux Today

Tonight we will have a conversation with Dave Whitinger one of the original founders of Linux Today in a discussion about the roots of the Linux Communities oldest Newslink resource. If you do not know what Linux Today is, you certainly do not know enough about Linux to know about The Linux Show. So its sort of silly to talk about it here.

If we go way way back Dave did a stint at Red Hat. Dave worked as the manager of the technical support department of Red Hat Software back in 1997. After leaving Red Hat, he co-founded Linux Today with Dwight Johnson. In his days at Linux Today, Dave handled just about everything imaginable at Linux Today. In addition to posting stories, he handled all the web development, perl and PHP programming, system and network administration, and any technical challenges that came along. In late 99 LT was sold to the present owners, internet.com (presently known as Jupiter Media) and Dave went his merry way.

After Linux Today, Dave participated in the development of several well known ventures including Linsight, Atipa and Linux Weekly News. Dave is a very cool guy who has survived the ups and downs of the IT universe, and has both the scars and laurels to prove it. Dave is presently the founder of StandardOut, Inc a web site development and hosting service company. These days he does private consulting of Linux and PHP development.

Dave lives in South/Central Texas (Kerrville). At 27 years old (a mere child to have done all he has) he has been married for 7 years with 3 children, the latest one born 2 weeks ago at home! When not doing Linux stuff, he is usually digging around in his garden.

We have also invited a representative from the current staff of Linux Today to talk about the future of the portal. As of the time of this press release we still have no confirmation of who that representative might be.

The show starts in just under 3 and a half hours from this post.

Tonight Live: SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM (bloody Vikings) >> on The Linux Show!!

Segment One- The News. We will cover THE HOT NEWS of the week including: Microsoft lies, The Sun goes Down, Linux Games, Virus, spam, a clueless pundit or two........ and way more.

Segment Two- SPAM SUCKS- and what to do about it

Tonight we had a guest cancel on us. So in light of that we are going to address a topic that was high on the agenda of TLS this past week, and that is dealing with the explosion of spam.

A couple days before our show last week, a SPAM program being distributed on the Internet had our domain (thelinuxshow.com) in its database of suggested outgoing domains to use with a bulk email list. This file could also be used with a Trojan that can co-opt other computers and convert them into SMTP relay boxes all with spoofed outgoing domains. Within short order there were dozens of (primarily newbies) of people out there on the Internet, that were using our domain, and dozens more that were being used as a relay.

During the course of last week we spent 16 man hours contacting ISPs round the world using standard abuse methods and in some cases a threat of retribution. In 10 cases we also contacted the FBI for fraud. I want to thank all those ISPs around the world that helped to plug up the holes in the dam.

So, tonight we thought we would relate the story to you, the techniques we used to solve the issue, and an open discussion on our favorite Spam tools.

Another week another show it starts in just over 2 and a half hours from this post.

Segment One- The News. We will cover THE HOT NEWS of the week including: Cubs loose and all is normal in the world, Microsoft's DOJ blues, The Truth is out there, Something Fishy at SCO, IBM says Linux can not be stopped, a clueless pundit or two........ and way more.

Segment Two- Getting Linux Certified- An Update with Linux Professional Institute

Tonight we will be joined by Evan Leibovitch President and Chairman of the Board of LPI. For those of you living in a closet, LPI or the Linux Professional Institute is a community organization advocating the professional use of Linux. It is best known around the world as the organization that developed the metrix and testing protocols for a professional Linux skills certification certification exam. LPI's industry standard certifications are delivered in thousands of locations worldwide, in multiple languages and with the support of employers, vendors, and trainers. LPI is a vendor neutral organization, but is used as the basic metric for several different curricula; including Comptia's Linux Plus.

Tonight we will be discussing several topics with Evan, including the current state of certification development, and we are sure we will discuss Evans recent trip to Europe.

Evan was one of the co-founders of LPI. Before taking the role as LPI President, he was a Vice President at Starnix Inc., a Linux-centric VAR located near Toronto. He registered his first Internet domain in 1986, has been involved with Unix even longer, and first started using Linux in 1996. He was a co-founder of the Canadian Linux Users' Exchange and has written on Linux issues for a number of publications. Evan has a degree in Philosophy from York University and a graduate degree in Journalism from Ryerson Polytechnic University. Evan presently lives in Ontario, Canada.

Looks like a good show it starts in just over 2 and a half hours from this post.

Segment One- The News. We will cover THE HOT NEWS of the week including: Darl Spews on, Gates to Give Comdex keynote, ,a clueless pundit or two........ and way more.

Segment Two- Moving To Linux- A book by Marcel Gagné

Tonight we will be joined by long time Linux Show friend Marcel Gagné. Marcel has been a guest on TLS before as a interesting and dynamic member of our community. We are pleased to have him on the show once again, and for such a good reason, the release of his new book Moving To LINUX This book is also subtitled as a tease, "Kiss the Blue Screen of Death Goodbye."

Marcel Gagné is probably best known as the award-winning author of the Linux Journal "Cooking with Linux Series", for which he received the Readers' Choice award for favorite column three years in a row. His first book was the highly acclaimed "Linux System Administration : A User's Guide".

Marcel is also one of the best known advocacy voices of the Linux community, he has written over 200 articles on Linux and open source projects for various publications including Linux Journal, InformIT, Unix Review, SysAdmin magazine, and others. A long-time systems and network administrator, he now runs a systems and network consulting firm, is a published science fiction author and editor, a pilot, an avid science and astronomy buff, and a former top 40 disc jockey. He also folds a mean Origami T-Rex and is one hell of a nice guy.

Jeffs Review so far....
"I have to tell you the truth, it is show time and I have only had the chance to read a few chapters in Marcels new book. But so far I really love it. It is an idea first time primer to the Linux newbie and more readable than Linux for Dummies. I am also very happy that there is a companion CD. Just like Marcel's well know column at Linux JournalCooking with Linux the book is laid out in a very well organized step by step fashion. This will make all the more easier for the newbie. I also love the fact that Marcel does not take life so serious, and can inject humor in the book. The ONLY suggestion I would make is that marcel write a companion piece that would create a series of tasks or exercises to supplement each chapters topic. That would make this very well written book also available as a text material. We need more good Linux Texts and this is a candidate."

The show starts in just under three hours from this post.

We will be broadcasting the Open SOurce Town Hall Meeting tonight live from the Key note stage following Darl McBrides Keynote to discuss Open Source in the Enterprise. It should prove to be a very interesting discussion as a representative from SCO will be at the event.

Here is the "official" description of the Town Hall Meeting from The Enterprise Week Expo site.

The Open Source Town Hall Meeting
Conference chairman Jack Powers moderates a Town Hall discussion on the implications of the SCO actions and the future of Open Source. (Open to all registered CDXPO visitors.)
Panelists:
Jeff Gerhardt, Host and Producer, The Linux Show
Steven J. Henry, Chair, IP Transactions Group, Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks, P.C.
David Schatsky, Senior Vice President of Research, Jupiter Research
Chris Sontag, Senior Vice President and General Manager, SCOsource, The SCO Group

A couple of important notes of consideration.
1) For those of you who have been giving Jupiter Media a lot of grief about inviting McBride to Speak (his keynote), you should be aware that this Town Hall Meeting was in place as a platform for opposing views (truths) from long ago. The complaints about Jupiter are not warranted. If fact the reverse is true. With all the lies spewing from SCO, the more often they speak at events, the more foolish they (SCO) look.

2) It is entirely possible that this show may not come off as expected. The network reliability here at the Mandalay Bay is "ify" at best. If this does not work we will attempt to record the segment and broadcast it this coming Thursday evening.

Segment Two- Open Discussion-

The regular panel will be having a conversation about their impressions of the Town Hall Meeting as well as any important news coming out of Vegas (comdex) this week. There will be a 5 to 10 minute break between segments to shift equipment around.

Looks like an interestings show it will start in just over 3 hours from this post.

Tonight Live: Desktop Distro Standards, do we need them? >> on The Linux Show!!!
Tuesday, December 2nd, 2003 from Chicago IL the Home of
Tonight LIVE on www.thelinuxshow.com.

At 6pm pt, 7pm mt, 8pm ct, and 9pm et.... Kevin Hill, Arne Flones, Doc Searls, Russ Pavlicek AND Jeff Gerhardt are all back live tonight. We have a very different show lined up for tonight.

Segment One- The News. We will cover THE HOT NEWS of the week including: ,a clueless pundit or two........ and way more.

Segment Two- Desktop Linux Distros, do we really need a standard one?- What is Bruce up to this time???

Tonight we are going to have our old friend Bruce Perens on the show. We are going to discuss the effort by Bruce and a number of folks in creating a universal Desktop Distro of the Linux Kernel. This concept was announced a month ago at a Desktop Linux conference where he announced the creation of userlinux.com/. You may also want to read about another similar effort at http://freedesktop.org/~jg/roadmap.html

Advance disclaimer. Some of us at TLS are not sold on this idea. That is why we thought it fair to invte Bruce and have him sell us on the idea. Please note that although we may not be convinced yet does not mean this is an adversarial situation. There is room for disagreements from time to time even with friends.

Last night's show was very interesting. They had Bruce Perens on discussing his upcoming new project: UserLinux. UserLinux is supposed to be a desktop based Linux distro, based on Debian, that will be developed on a cost sharing model between various companies. The idea is that instead of using a Distro like Red Hat (which you now have to pay for and which has the potential for vendor lock in) companies will contribute money/resources to the UserLinux Consortium. In return anyone will be able to use UserLinux without paying a per seat fee (i.e. it's fee as in beer). UserLinux will then coordinate with hardware vendors to make sure that things work and are supported. It sounds like a good idea. Hopefully it will work. You can still listen to the archived version of last night's show on The Linux Show's web site.

Segment Two- LinuxWorld Conference & Expo News-

Tonight we are going to joined by Warwick Davies Group Vice President IDG World Expo to talk about what is new this year with our favorite Linux Conference (now that ALS is gone), the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo held next month January 20th through 23rd at NYC's Javit's center. The event is of course put on by the folks at IDG World Expo, a business unit of IDG.

If you have been living under a rock the last few years, LinuxWorld Conference & Expo is the premier event exclusively focused on Linux and open source solutions. As the world's most comprehensive marketplace for open source products and services, LinuxWorld provides business decision-makers with information and resources to implement Linux and open source solutions into business infrastructure and enterprise networks. Plus it is fun.

Editorial Note: TLS will be broadcasting17 hours of live broadcasts from the Javits Center in NYC over the three day run of the event. As we embark upon our 7th year of webcasting TLS (The Linux Show), we find it very gratifying that we can renew our long relationship with the folks at IDG who have been so kind over the years to give us their support in bringing our broadcast to their technology events.

Warwick Davies is a Group Vice President at IDG World Expo responsible for the Macworld Conference & Expo and LinuxWorld Conference & Expo brands. Warwik recently joined the company in July 2003. Before joining IDG World Expo, he was an independent consultant helping companies quickly and profitably discover and launch international business opportunities in the high tech and biotech sectors.

Prior to running his own consulting business, he was Vice President of Expositions and International Business Development at DCI, one of North America's premier business and technology conference and exposition organizers. At DCI, Warwick conceived and launched DCI's international conference program, including events in the UK, Germany, France, Japan, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. He also held worldwide responsibility for DCI's Customer Relationship Conference and Exposition.

Prior to joining DCI, Warwick held a series of international sales, marketing, operations and administration management positions with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa Germana Airlines, Hertz Corporation and the British Government. Warwick is also author of The Freeport Experiment, a book detailing the success and failures of the UK free trade zones. He holds a BS in Economics from Northeastern University.

We will be joined tonight by Dave Whitinger. Dave has been on TLS many times, including last falls LinuxToday Anniversary show. Tonight we will chat with Dave about his latest couple undertakings including his new LXer news site.

Dave worked for Red Hat in 1997, and in 1998 he co-founded Linux Today with Dwight Johnson. After selling Linux Today to internet.com, he worked with Atipa in their web services department until everyone was laid off. For much of 2002, he worked for the good folks at LWN.net, helping them with business development issues after their unacquisition from TUCOWS.

LXer(.com) (pronounced Elexer) is a Linux news website whose goal is to be driven by an editor who knows and cares about the Linux community, has only relevant and tasteful (and text-based!) advertisements, frequently updated with useful and interesting stories, announcements, reviews, security alerts and editorials, fun features to give easy access to the news, community participation through discussion forums and open story queue moderation, and an open database (compltely open with external links included. Anyone can have their own Linux news website using our feed!)

Tonight Live: The OSDL Desktop Initiative>> on The Linux Show!!
Tonight: On The Linux Show!!
Tuesday, February 24th, 2004 from Chicago IL
Tonight on www.thelinuxshow.com.

Kevin Hill, Arne Flones, Doc Searls, Russ Pavlicek AND Jeff Gerhardt are
bringing you a great show tonight ready to go!!!!!!

Segment One- The News. We will cover THE HOT NEWS of the week including:
Shame on Intel, Microsoft returns to its DARK SIDE, Wide Spread news on
the desktop, a clueless pundit or two........ and way more.

Segment Two- OSDL DESKTOP LINUX WORKING GROUP INITIATIVE -

We will be joined tonight by Stacey Quandt. Stacey is a principal
analyst at OSDL. She is responsible for covering key market trends
important to IT vendors and corporate end users of Linux. She is a
principal speaker for the Lab at industry conferences and trade shows
and plays a leadership role in developing Lab market research, technical
publications and industry opinion pieces. Prior to joining OSDL she was
an industry analyst at Forrester Research, where she created the firm's
Open Source Research Competency. There she advised Fortune 1000
customers with tactical and strategic advice on Linux and published
research. A popular speaker at industry conferences and events, she has
presented at LinuxWorld Conference & Expo, Oracle OpenWorld, the
National and Local eGovernment Programs, GigaWorld IT Forum, IBM
Roadshows, Sun Microsystems ISV Advisory Board, and many others.

OSDL or the Open Source Development Lab, is the present home to Linus
Torvalds, the creator of Linux. OSDL is dedicated to accelerating the
growth and adoption of Linux. Founded in 2000 and supported by a global
consortium of Linux customers and IT industry leaders, OSDL is a
non-profit organization that provides Linux expertise and computing and
test facilities in the United States and Japan available to developers
around the world.

In January OSDL launched a new Desktop Linux Working Group initiative
focused on greater use of Linux on desktops throughout the enterprise.
The initiative was created in response to OSDL constituents from around
the world, including the United States, Europe, Japan and China. The
shared goal is to create a forum where a range of desktop usage models
can be studied with recommendations on improvements to encourage broader
adoption of Linux. The charter of the Desktop Linux Working Group is to
work with the open source community to identify a broad set of Linux
desktop models, then develop specifications and deliver reference
implementations.

This working group is also supported by OSDL's Linux User Advisory
Council, which is comprised of senior IT executives from global 500
companies. The overall working group objectives have been developed by
an exploratory committee with representatives from freedesktop.org, HP,
IBM, Intel, Novell, OSDL, Red Hat and Sun Microsystems.

This working group has the interest and full support of OSDL members.
The use of Linux on the desktop is exploding around the world, far
faster than even we at TLS expected. According to market research firm
IDC, paid shipments of Linux rose to 2.8 percent of desktop operating
systems in 2002, up from 1.7 percent two years earlier. In 2004, it is
expected to surpass the total new product shipments for the Mac OS.

So, tonight we explore the role of the new desktop initiative, and we
examine the future of Linux desktops.

We will cover THE HOT NEWS of the week including: TLS has a child, Unhappy web host clients make unhappy web host company, the word is out for the RIAA and it STINKS, Microsoft's tap dances, Novell on the path, NASA has a great month, a clueless pundit or two........ and way more.

Segment Two- A Call to Action- Can we save the Internet?-

We will be joined tonight by the CEO & president of Brand X Internet, Jim Pickrell. Jim has announced a call to action for ISPs and their customers to form a coalition that will advance the cause of open, non-discriminatory access to broadband networks of all kinds. Many ISPs, WISPs and ISP industry association executives have already expressed interest and their support in joining the alliance. Jim has fought this battle on his own so far. With the very capable representation of his counsel Harvey Reiter, they have successfully and single-handedly challenged the FCC. Now its time to take this to the next level.

Jim has been waging a one man battle since Novebmer of 2004 against the phone and cable companies. You can find out more about Jim original call to arms at http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2004/Jan/1022607.htm. Recently the success of his efforts have caused a stir in the ISP industry that is motivating the ISP associations to pull together and try to get politically organized.

We at TLs recognise the battle that is before Jim, having had the experience of trying to get the now stalled "GeekPac" political action committee started in the Open Source movement. It is HARD to get people politically organized around a narrow group of issues, even when their livelyhood is at stake. It is very hard to get a non-partisan movement started. So, some of us here at TLS have agreed to through what weight we had behind Jim's movement.

Also joining us will be a representative from ISPCON, the ISP trade association conference & expo, probably their President Jon Price. TLS will be participating in ISPCON and will be doing some lobbying with the FCC and other parties in DC.

The show starts an hour from this post and should be available in the archives (http://www.thelinuxshow.com/archives.shtml) after completion.
