Does anyone know of a W***s cd that will do what Knoppix does? That is, boot into W***s from a cd, autoconfigure, contain lots of apps, and by default at least not touch the hard drive?

Nothing like that exists now (to my knowledge), but Microsoft is known to be working on a MINIMAL OS-boot-from-CD, primarily for rescue purposes. Since the current version 5 (2000/XP) eschews any DOS underpinnings, this makes sense.

It's also pretty clear that this would be nothing more than SAFE-mode-from-CD with backup/rescue/restore utilities. It would take SOME work to make it anything more -- and would be so against any documented MS licensing as to be ludicrous.

Well, that would be a pertty good idea since, for now, the only way to recuperate data from a really fucked up Windows partition is to read it from Linux.

Now, if this doesn't make you sick of Microsft's nonsense, what does?

actually, this does exist. it is called Windows PE (Preinstallation Environment) and, as far as I know, isn't for purchase or free download.

That's what I was making reference to in my earlier post -- but I couldn't remember the name...

google search microsoft embedded xp

Microsoft advertises a bootable embedded xp cd disc using El Torito specifications
for building embedded applications, but might have other applications.
