This one was brought to my attention by Richenbacharus.... (I think, apologies if not)

apt-get install synaptic

Wicked program, bit like add/remove windows (sorry, meant programs) under Micro$**t.

Synaptic shows you what's installed, what's available to install (from Debian) and also let's you do the apt-get update, apt-get upgrade/dist-upgrade stuff with a nice GUI. Give it a try, you got nothing to lose..
