alright heres my situation. ive been using knoppix hd install for some time and love it. however like ALL distros, my radeon 7500 would not get detected and i would get horrible 3d performance. today i acciedentally had my knoppix cd in the tray and it booted. while it was booting i paid careful attention to the text and noticed something similar to this:

AGP Bridge Detected
video = Radeon QW(75000) using x(radeon) server.

so i let it boot into kde and tried a 3d game(chromium) and was surpassed to see that i was getting 3d accelerted graphics.

Why did it detect my gpu while im using live mode and not after after i do an hdinstall???

plez help

sudo xedit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Look for the section that looks something like this:

# The following line is auto-generated by KNOPPIX mkxf86config
Driver "vesa"
VendorName "All"
BoardName "All"
# BusID "PCI:1:0:0"

Make sure the driver is either ati or radeon like so:

Driver "ati"

or

Driver "radeon"

My 7200 uses the ati.

After that, do this:

glxinfo

It should have a line that looks like this:

direct rendering: Yes

That should do it.

So are you using the ati or radeon driver in XF86Config-4?

If so - did you restart the xserver before running glxinfo?

glxinfo just tells you info about direct rendering and such. What you need to compare are your XF86Config-4 files. Have a look at the "booted from cd" XF86Config-4 and see what driver it's using.

both config files are the same. but i did notice something else. i did a search on dri and found that
/dev/dri/card0 is 0b when its around 800b its live mode
/proc/dri has a size of ob but in the live mode its 12.5mb

im not sure if that helps but might as well post it
