Open Konqueror and in the location bar ftp://user_name@your.ftp.site if a password is required then a dialog asking for it will pop up and if you split the window in Konqueror then you can use drag'n'drop to copy files.

Stephen's advice will let you upload. You're probably thinking that you can only download because your local directory is not shown within the konqueror window. All you need to do is open another copy of konqueror for your local files and then copy and past them into your ftp window. I realize this isn't the most elegant solution. Knoppix really needs a graphical ftp client like gftp or kbear. Maybe one of them will be added one day if space can be found.
