Problems with non ASCII characters in Java

Hi,
I am having problems on CD booted and HD installed Knoppix with Java applets an appiccations. Both don't display non ASCII characters like umlauts.
This is especially annoying with Java applets (both Mozilla and Konqueror).
Does anybody know a way to configure this correctly?
