booting knoppix without the gui coming up

I'm working on a box that has crashed and trying to recover data from a drive. the problem is when knoppix boots into it's gui it freezes the box... is their a option somewhere that I can do so that it doesn't go straight into the gui... and remember i only have the time of the boot screen to do it.
