change acceleration of USB Mouse

When I change the acceleration settings of my USB mouse in the control center no changes take effect to the mouse. The acceleration changes on the laptops touchpad but the acceleration does not change on the USB mouse? Does anybody know how to up the acceleration on the USB mouse?
