you can try the debian way :

apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.22

If you have dowloaded the source there are a couple of guides I have found The Very Verbose Guide (http://ftp.sun.ac.za/ftp/linux/docs/CompilingDebianKernel.html) and the Custom Kernel Package Guide (http://newbiedoc.sourceforge.net/system/kernel-pkg.html) you should read them both.
