I have the driver for it, but it's a source code.
I have no idea how to compile.
Can someone give me a quick tutorial?

here's the driver package win32/linux/etc. 3.32 MB (3,489,792 bytes)

here is just the linux portion 48.0 KB (49,152 bytes)

This is a VIA EPIA the onboard NIC "just works"(tm).
1. what sort of VIA mobo/LAN?
2. check it's enabled in the BIOS ... the BIOS default settings on this machine disable it.

No nic card, it's onboard, and i know it's enabled cause im using it right now.
I tri-boot windows 98, xp, and server 2003 and my onboard lan works fine in each of those OS'

Is the NIC activated in the BIOS?

So what model motherboard?
Does dmesg | grep eth report anything?
What information does an 'expert' boot give?
How are you running Knoppix? From CDROM or installed on HD?

- Compiling the module may be a bit awkward when running from CDROM (and you'll want to save the configuration), but the instructions in the linux.txt look reasonable if you've installed Knoppix to the HD.

The bit that's important was the "VIA VT6105 Rhine-III".
Looking at the code for the via-rhine.o that model's listed as supported, so once again, is the card being detected or not? What the result of
dmesg | grep eth
Booting in 'expert' mode may allow you to force load the module.
If it's being detected, but not configured then netcardconfig is the solution ...[/code]

I have the same problem. My motherboard is EliteGroup K7VTA3 with onboard lan. It needs kernel module rhinefet.o which is absent in Knoppix.

How can knoppix load this module form /dev/sda1?

I have just added this to my custom CD. It should be available for download on 1-10-04 on the overclockix site- http://overclockix.octeams.com. It is being added to the Technomancer version.

The iso is ready. I will probably upload it to the overclockix site overnight, so it should be ready to download tomorrow.

Newest iso, now featuring via rhinefet.o module for onboard Via 6105C network cards and 3c2000 module for kt600 and canterwood chipset network cards is now available for download.

I am not using Knoppix but Debian stable (hope that doesn't make me illegal here, didn't see anything saying I couldn't register) I have a VIA EPI-CL mini-ITX motherboard with VT6105 LAN on motherboard controller controlling two ethernet ports. I'd love to get one or both ports working using a kernel from the Debian stable distribution (e.g. 2.4.18-686 currently running on that machine). Is there any chance that you have a rhinefet.o that would modprobe into action that I could use? If not, any chance that someone has a Makefile and other bits for the rhinefet that works with such a Debian kernel? The one I've pulled off the VIA site is clearly expecting all sorts of things to be different in the Linux source tree and make and gcc are things I touch only in extremis as I'm an amateur sysadmin, not fulltime or well trained!

TIA (Email to chris at psyctc.org would be hugely appreciated as I'm not a regular on this board and not sure yet if the notification works)
