Hi, i'm new to Knoppix but I find it the best OS ever!!! I would like to get some help with it because I cannot go on the net. My eth0 card is Fast Ethernet PCI Realtek RTL8139 Family (in Knoppix its 8139eth0 I think). I don't know why it is not detected or whatever but the error is something like this: Could not find http://www.altavista.com. And it says some other thing.
Anyways I hope you guys can help me
Thanks

What are you trying to do? Are you running from CD or a hd install?
Are you trying to run remote-terminal sessions or just get your card up in knoppix so that you can connect to the internet?
What kind of internet connection do you have?

if you are running in X (graphical mode), start konsole or xterm and use the following command:

sudo ifconfig
here is the output on my computer:

knoppix@1[knoppix]$ sudo ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:CC:3E:40:4C
inet addr:192.168.1.95 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

RX bytes:967264 (944.5 KiB) TX bytes:248993 (243.1 KiB)

UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

The " eth0 " information is about my NIC, I have a couple of rtl8139 cards and they have been set up by knoppix on my systems, but I have a gateway computer that is running a dhcp server so when I run knoppix I get my NIC set up by dhcp on the gateway.

If you don't have an entry for eth0 then run the following command:

sudo modprobe 8139too
if you get error messages here post them back, if you don't get any error messages, then type this command:

sudo netcardconfig
if you have a router you should select dhcp broadcast, if you are using a windows computer for your gateway and are using windows internet connection sharing, you will have to enter the ip address, netmask, network address, gateway and nameserver. Easiest way to find this info is to boot into windows, run winipcfg and from the drop down select your rtl8139 network card, write down all of the above and then put that info in with netcardconfig.

Ok did you configure you NIC card, when Knoppix comes up you access you main menu clicking the icon in your lower left side that has a Icon ilustrated with a Sproket with a "K" on top of it, that opens your main menu, ok. Then you look for Knoppix on this menu and select it the it open a sub-menu were you will select network/internet this will open another sub-menu were you will select network configuration card, when selected it will open a Console type subroutine in text and will start asking questions to you so it can configure you NIC card.

First it will ask if you use DHCP Server?
You will answer no.
Then it will ask you for your IP Number?
An show you 192.168.0.1 as an example there you will enter the IP number you normanlly use in that particular machine in Windows.
The it will ask you for your mask?
An show you 255.255.255.0 as an example this usually works so you can use that one as is.
Then it will ask for your publishing IP or something like it.
There it will show you as an example 192.168.0.255 this usually works so you can use that one as is.
The it will ask you for your gateway?
An show you 192.168.0.254 or something similar, if you are using a gateway because you connect thru a network you have to use the gateways IP this is normally 192.168.0.1 in personal o home networks, it is very important that you use the correct IP on this one so make sure you got it...
The other parameters if I am not wrong can be use as shown on there particular examples..
I hope this help you at least a little...I am relatively new a this to so keep at it;
It's a great time to be Here with all this....
