how do i fine out what the password is

You're trying to install something to a read-only file system? It won't work friend. Besides- there is already a client called GAIM for instant messaging. As for the "what's the root password" question- enter that into the search field. That is undoubtedly the most frequently asked question.

I'm guessing you are booted from CD. Well, you'll have a hard time installing anything if that is the case, because most of the directories you'd need to write to are not writeable. The program gaim can connect on yahoo protocols, though yahoo did just make some changes that could cause problems...

There is not root password by default. You can set one like this:

Open a terminal and run these commands:

su
passwd root

Next reboot, that password will be gone.


During a hdd-install, you will set passwords for root and knoppix.
