Well, I was just pondering giving Knoppix a try and I was reading though the information and they say that you you burn the ISO to a 700mb CD-RW, however I noticed that the actual file size for the ISO is 716,504kb, so in short how exactly is this possible? Thanks alot.

It fits- check your math.

The ISO file itself will not be burned. What is burned are files inside ISO image. So there is a not a direct relation between ISO size and CD size.

--No, I believe you are incorrect; the actual ISO file is burned directly to CD as a disc image, because otherwise it wouldn't be able to boot.

--Note: 700*1024 == 716800 - so it just barely fits w/o overburning.

Well, there is more than one type of cd image. BIN image is other type. I have just converted the ISO image to BIN and his size is 823001kb
Now the question may be asked in this terms

--That has nothing to do with what he was asking, and I already posted the math.

the math

The ISO file is 716,626 Mb
but...always is a but
right clicking over the file
Properties
There is the following information

size 699MB (733,825,024)
size on disk (733.839.366)

The ISO size is something like
716.626MB*1024=733,825,024
(no 700mb*1024, actually is bigger than)

But the cd is only 700Mb, no 716MB) How is this?

Right clicking over knoppix live-cd
Properties

the capacity is 733.825.024 699MB

then if we explore the CD and after
Select all
Properties
we see
55 files 45 folders
Size 699mb (733,370,330)
Size on disk 699 (733,427,712)

Actually in a 700MB cd are more than 733,000,000 bytes

The magic number here is 1048576 (this is from hexadecimal numbers 16 256 4096 1048576)

700*1048576=734,003,200

But if the 700mb CD-RW is only 734,000,000 bytes, however I noticed that the actual file size for the Konppix live-cd BIN image is 823,001,000 bytes, so how is this possible? :?
Thanks a lot.

Let me clear this up.

There are two different ways of measuring megabytes: in 1,000,000 bytes, and in 1,024,768 bytes. When a CD says 700MB, that's measured when a megabyte is 1,024,768 bytes. When the ISO image says 716MB or whatever, that's 716MB measured where a megabyte is a million bytes.
It's just the way you measure megabytes, and after all, if Knoppix didn't fit on a CD then it wouldn't be a Live-CD distro, would it?

Perhaps there's extraneous information in the BIN file, and it just doesn't copy that information to the CD - I don't know a thing about BIN files. What I know is that the Knoppix ISO image fits on a single CD.

(Your Maths teacher weeps nightly at the thought of you) :twisted: (but then again so does mine) :roll:

--We need to talk about KB here, not MB.

700*1024 = 716800KB CDR possible size
733,825,024 / 1024 = 716626KB ISO size, with space left over

Number of bytes on a maxed-out regular 700MB CDR: 734,003,200
Size of the ISO: 733,825,024

===========
= IT FITS
===========

--I repeat again, the BIN image is no factor here, we are talking about ISO's.

But if the 700mb CD-RW is only 734,000,000 bytes, however I noticed that the actual file size for the Konppix live-cd BIN image is 823,001,000 bytes, so how is this possible? :?
Thanks a lot.
