I am a Linux newbie, I admit, so I am asking for a little help in the right direction.

I am using the NIC on my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-7N400-L1, nForce2 Ultra400 based). The southbridge is the nVidia MCP where the LAN runs through.

How do I setup internet to work with my LAN? Windows internet and networking works fine, I can't get Linux (Knoppix being run live, or with the installed version of Red Hat v9 "Shrike).

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

The Gigibyte spec-sheet says the network is a Realtek 8201.

Googling suggests there's not a lot of documentation about this chipset, see for example:
http://www.matrixlist.com/pipermail/leaplist/2003-June/031523.html

<looks some more>
Some people are getting it going with the sis900 driver:-

eth0: Realtek RTL8201 PHY transceiver found at address 1.
eth0: Using transceiver found at address 1 as default
eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xd000, IRQ 10, 00:0a:e6:79:fc:fa.
eth0: Media Link On 100mbps full-duplex

Good luck...

There are also a couple of remastered CD's that have nforce 2 drivers.

Overclockix and Morphix.
