During boot, I receive the following message:

Starting CUPSys: cupsdmodprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-188

modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-188
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-188

What's going on here? My printer seems to work, but the paragraph format looks strange (e.g., words on a single line are spaced strangely). Granted, this may not be related to the aforementioned boot message. Any help would be appreciated.

On my system, char-device-188 is USB:-
root@ni:~# ls -l /dev | grep 188,
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 2002-07-14 07:55 ttyUSB0
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 1 2002-07-14 07:55 ttyUSB1
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 10 2002-07-14 07:55 ttyUSB10
so nothing to do with paragraph layout.

Perhaps fonts? Especially the font metrics files ...
