Knoppix 3.1 Root Password and Knoppix User

Hi,
I installed off my knoppix 3.1 disks today, and i set my root password.
After the install I cannont login with my root password and i also cannot login as knoppix :)
any help.
I have tried booting with knoppix and editing /etc/shadow but there is a * in between the first set of colons ?

Any advice :)

Are you sure it's not just your keyboard driver which is incorrect?
Otherwise, boot off the CD, mount your root partition in RW mode,
chroot to the mount point, and reset the passwords.

At the LILO screen type in linux single and enter then when you get to the console passwd to set a new root password and if you want at the same time passwd knoppix and set one there as well reboot (shutdown -r now in the console) and see if was successful.
