If I am not mistaken, Knoppix is compiled for i486 (source of info is the great website www.distrowatch.com). I thought there was a performance gain when compiling for i586, and I seriously doubt a lot of people still use x486 hardware ?

Wouldn't it be interesting to compile future knoppix versions for the i586 in order to gain speed ?

Thanks for your reaction,
Erik. (B) :)

Knoppix uses default Debian packages, so there's not really a way to get other binaries on the disk. pat-get will moan that the md5 checksums of your files are false.

thereby, the speedgain whould be very small, I think. there has been some hassle about this, esp on the gentoo pages (which, as you may know, is specific compiled for your pc/on your pc) and it turns out debian isnt that bad, performance-wise. btw debian is even i386-"optimized"...

the info google might give you on this is very strange - some say optimizing works very well, others say it doesnt. I dont know, but I dont care either ;-)
