Shouldn't the title read: "New Knoppix release V3.3-2003-11-19"?

Where Can I get a good Mirror, they all don't seem to have it, or they are overly bogged. A BT link could also be helpful, I just want the ISO.
Thanks,

Well, I saw it on the FSU mirror, for one. Look at the top of this screen and click "Get Knoppix".

This is a good mirror. I am getting about 350KB/sec over cable here in the US.

hi there

in my notebook theres an intel soundchip built in. In the last release the sndconfig said that it wasn't a supported card... although the card worked in the 3.2 release of knoppix...

is this a general alsa problem or what am i doing wrong?

thx!

I do not find the link to start the client of the bittorrent in the new release :x . How I can start it  ? Which is the command  ?

Please Help Me!!

K0K, there is no link for the bittorrent client, you have to run it from a console. Just open a Konsole and type btdownloadcurses for more help. I also have a script to execute bittorrent step by step (choose file, speed, folder, ...) if you want it I can translate it to english and post it here.

I don't like the latest releases of Knoppix, it has lost some nice applications like Ksim and KDE Guard, and now it's missing AbiWord. I like AbiWord because it can recognize password protected documents created with MS Word 2000, while KWord and Openoffice Writer can't open them.

Superstoned
11-21-2003, 06:45 PM
and there are graphical frontents for bittorrent, too.

if abiword can open these password protected wordfiles, and kword can't, why not do a feature request in kword, pointing to abiword's capabilities, so they can copy it(its Open Sourced, isnt it?)

Could someone publish somewhere result of dpkg -l on current knoppixes?

I'm wondering whether should I spend another 2 days on downloading current version to check which programs changed?

Is it correct that I can update Knoppix 2003-11-14 to 2003-11-19 with this command:

apt-get dist-upgrade

bxb32001
11-23-2003, 03:44 PM
You'll upgrade your system that's for sure, but not to a new Knoppix release... Regarding HD installs, I don't think you need to download each release of Knoppix each time there's a new release out. If your current install is fine then you can keep using that and just run 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get upgrade' to keep your system up to date.

As mentioned somewhere else in the forums, a dist-upgrade might end up breaking things. An apt-get upgrade is usually your best bet.

Knoppix is basically Debian and dist upgrade means upgrading from a version of Debian to a higher or more recent one... like the 'stable' branch of Debian to either 'testing' or 'unstable'. This is how I understand it to be. By the way, stable, testing, and unstable are rather descriptive of their state in Debian's development process. Knoppix, IIRC, is a mix (of mostly testing and unstabe?).

Knoppix, I believe, is Debian that is re-packaged into a live CD so the difference between releases would be the packages included and how recent they are (updates and bug fixes). That should be about it. Basically, you should be able to easily compensate for any difference between releases by keeping your system up to date and downloading (or removing) packages for/from your system.

Next Knoppix release, it is possible to bundle these two? They have much more functionality than Mozilla 1.5 and load in half the time. :) Just a suggestion. Thanks for knoppix!!!

I love Knoppix! I have been useing it since I was introduced to it by my unix instructor about a year ago. Every time a new release comes out, I downloaded it and pass my older version on to someone else; hoping they will enjoy it as much as I do. Anyways, I am stuck on the version that was released on 9-24-2003. All the new versions give me an error message "cant resolve address" when I try to mount network drives. I run knoppix directly off the cd as to avoid any viruses or my kids damaging any files. I map to my network to save my files. My first version of Knoppix would bring up the entire network in the LinNeighborhood as soon as I opened it; at work, home, or school. The later versions I've had to individually query each machine.
I really would like the newer releases to work for me, and even better if they could work like my first.

I have now got about 20 people, must of them don't know how to do any thing but turn the power on and surf the internet, using these disks when they get on the internet just to keep me from having to work on their machines all the time. Knoppix has been a lifesaver for me! Thank you!

bxb32001
11-24-2003, 02:33 AM
@xstreamfisherman:

I am pretty sure you can do both - avoid virii and protect your files from your kids - on an HD installation. I would really recommend an HD install if you use Knoppix regularly. It will give you a lot more flexibility as you can keep your system up to date as well as have the ability to and add and remove packages.

Regaring viruses and such... I don't think this is a problem on a Linux box.

xstreamfisherman

I don't mean to confuse anyone, I use the CD on my laptops. I have several computers with linux installed. I have to use windows for programming (work). To protect my computer while surfing the Internet I use the CD. Windows has to many holes!

Another thing that I would love to see on the Knoppix CD would be a citrix client.

It is once you install to the HD and that is what you should do once you have installed but many people use the CD on a regular basis add into the equation new releases of software, kernels, driver updates and bug fixes ... the list goes on for reasons for a new release.

I wouldn't mind these bundled withy knoppix either. :) Of course the reason they are not is because they are still in early beta stages. Oops forgot to mention your referring to Mozilla Firebird and Thunderbird. Since the those names don't appear visible when viewing the message in the dorum.

Please don't remove AbiWord. If you want to make space, why not remove the German open office from the English CD, and vice versa. I wouldn't care if you removed openoffice altogether because it's too bloated and slow to run off of the CD for word processing. I have never actually needed it.

I would love to have Opera browser also, but I know there might be licensing issues. I was going to remaster opera into the CD, but changed my mind after hearing that the Knoppix CD is optimized, or defragmented so that it boots faster. How can one remaster and optimize the CD?

Superstoned
11-30-2003, 09:40 PM
well, imho abiword AND OO are useless, if you have Kword...

but its quite usuall everyone wants other software to be on the CD. Thats why imho Klaus just shouldnt listen ;-)

You can make a remaster if you wish... and of course there are other options...

Perhaps on your computer but not on mine. For all of it's problems Draw, Impress, and Calc have way more functionality than any of the alternatives and the ability to properly interact with MS stuff than any other office suite out there...some of us actually use this bloat :-)

Oh, well. Not a big deal as I am using a "Poormans Install" for my HTPC which is read-only anyway, so the script kiddies would be very disappointed when they discover that all of the goodies in storage are on a password protected Mandrake/Samba server and they can't get root. But, I was curious.
