No sound

Hello i wonder if anybody can help me, i install knoppix in my hard disk and i never had set up my sound card, i am using a laptop Compaq 1200 series I think that the sound card is an Apollo something, I´d also try linux Mandrake and i wasn´t able to set up the sound card either. please help... :P :shock:

Try entering the consol as root and type soundconfig or sndconfig or soundtool, I forget wich. The point is It should be easy from there. If this is a HDD install of knoppix, try seeing if it set up the sound for root properly. My experience has been that it sets up the root sound fine and the knoppix user is left soundless. In mandrake the sound is muted by default and most people only need to unmute it. Also if you have both onboard sound and a card it may have set up the wrong one. You can test that by merely switching the jack to the other card.
