CD Unit not available; cannot be mounted

After a fresh installation, my CD player refuses to start:

"error in drive"

I try to mount the unit, with no success

# mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /cdrom

mount : block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fstype, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc
or too many mounted filesystems

I've tried

/dev/cdrom
/dev/hdc
/dev/hdd

in /etc/fstab,

and none works.

Anybody knows what is going on?
